Manchester United face criticism over summer business for Bryan Mbeumo

Manchester United continue to dominate headlines with their transfer decisions, and one deal in particular has sparked fierce debate. Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas has openly criticised the club’s decision to spend heavily on Bryan Mbeumo this summer. Gallas described the transfer as “crazy,” and pointed out that while Mbeumo is a talented player who would improve many teams, he questioned whether such a high fee could be justified.

Gallas argued that United had spent heavily without strengthening the core of their first-choice starting XI. He added that conversations around football now seem to revolve far too much around money. Gallas acknowledged that transfer fees have been climbing every year, but insisted that the £71 million price tag for Mbeumo pushed the boundaries of sense. His comments reflected a wider sentiment that United’s spending has not always brought the balance and stability their squad urgently needs.

This summer, the Red Devils attempted to reshape their forward line under Ruben Amorim, yet the criticism from figures like Gallas adds another layer of pressure on both the manager and the players. With other transfer stories already swirling — from interest in Brentford talent Yehor Yarmoliuk to a possible January push for Carlos Baleba — the debate around the direction of United’s squad planning looks unlikely to fade.

“They have Bryan Mbeumo, and the player is good enough for most sides, but I don’t know if you can justify that transfer fee. They’ve spent an awful lot of money and not really changed too many of their first-choice XI. We’re always talking about money these days, and I know the prices keep on rising every year, but come on. This seems crazy.”

Why Mbeumo still fits United’s system?

While Gallas’s words struck a chord, there are still strong reasons to defend United’s decision to sign Bryan Mbeumo. The £71 million deal, including £6 million in add-ons, was about addressing a specific tactical need rather than simply adding another forward. Ruben Amorim has been committed to implementing his 3-4-3 formation at Old Trafford, and in that system, the wide forwards are central to creating and finishing chances.

Mbeumo’s pace, dribbling, and left-footed cutting edge made him the standout choice for the right-wing role. He also showed versatility at Brentford, often operating as both a striker and a winger, scoring 20 goals and providing seven assists in the previous Premier League season. That level of production explained why Brentford stood firm on their valuation and why United eventually had to pay top price after two earlier bids were rejected.

Since his move, the 26-year-old has featured six times in the league and once in the EFL Cup, scoring once in each competition. His quick adaptation to United’s setup shows promise, even if the goals have not yet flowed. Whether the signing proves wise in the long term will depend on Mbeumo’s numbers and how well the Cameroon links with Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes to bring consistency back to United’s attack.
