Former Napoli midfielder Ivan Trotta is surprised that Manchester United let Rasmus Hojlund leave

Manchester United made a lot of decisions in the summer transfer window of 2026, and one of them was definitely sorting out the future of Danish striker, Ramsus Hojlund. The 22-year-old striker joined Serie A club Napoli on a season-long loan deal with a fee of €6 million, and Napoli will have to buy him for €44 million when his loan deal expires. The Dane himself wanted a Serie A move.

The Red Devils suffered in attack in the 2024/25 season as Hojlund did not come up clutch throughout the season after just scoring four goals in the league. United had to strengthen the attack in the summer, and they were looking for a clinical striker. Ruben Amorim’s side signed Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and bought Benjamin Sesko as the striker. It was quite clear that the manager did not have the Dane in his plans this season, as he deliberately left him out of the squad in the initial matches.

Meanwhile, former Napoli midfielder Ivan Trotta is surprised that the Red Devils decided to part ways with the 22-year-old striker this summer, and heaped praise on his former club for signing an extraordinary young forward. The Italian feels that if Napoli have to buy him for €40-50 million at the end of the season, then it will be a great deal.

Trotta feels that Hojlund has the qualities to still shine in the top competitions and praised him for his effectiveness in his debut goal for Napoli against Fiorentina. He talked about the Dane’s sharp movement, composure, and the instincts of a natural finisher. Trotta also emphasised Hojlund’s strength in holding up play and linking attacks. He feels that Napoli have secured a player with the traits of a future top striker.

Here is what he said to 1 Station Radio (h/t Metro):

“Rasmus Hojlund is an extraordinary player who really impressed me on his debut against Fiorentina. He has incredible qualities, and the €40-50 million spent is justified because we are talking about a young talent with great potential. In the end, things turned out well because Hojlund has shown himself to be a very strong footballer, and for the price Napoli paid, they got a bargain.

“In just 14 minutes, he scored a goal as a pure striker, reading Spinazzola’s vertical pass perfectly while avoiding the offside trap. That goal was extremely difficult, yet he used his body well, held his position, and kept his composure. What impressed me even more was his ability to help the team progress by shielding the ball and preventing defenders from dispossessing him. He is a strong player with great potential, and in my opinion, Napoli even underpaid for the value he offers, once again making a great signing.”

Manchester United made the right call

Hojlund might keep scoring goals in the Serie A, as he has had the experience of the league during his successful stint with Atalanta, but it also underlines the difference in quality between the Premier League and the Serie A. The Italian league is naturally a slower-tempo league, and teams generally focus on tactical systems and build-up play, which could suit the Dane.

However, the Premier League is fast, physical, and quite direct, which did not suit the strengths of Hojlund. The Red Devils are a big club in the Premier League, and there was huge pressure on the 22-year-old to deliver week in and week out due to United’s current conditions and performances. Meanwhile, the pressure is also on the new signing, Sesko, as Paul Merson feels that the midfielders have to get the best out of the Slovenian, who comes for a high price tag as well.

In hindsight, the pressure of a high price tag and potentially a lack of consistent service from his teammates may have hampered Hojlund’s performance. The loan move to Napoli provides a fresh start, away from the immediate scrutiny of Old Trafford. This might allow him to rebuild his confidence and showcase the talent he displayed in Italy before moving to England. United also had to do something after a flop season from Hojlund, as they were running out of time to fix the glaring holes in the squad.
