Manchester United are still trying to find their feet under Ruben Amorim, as his 3-4-2-1 system has thrown a big challenge to the profiles of players that United have. The club are still trying to reshape the midfield as per the plans and tactics of the Portuguese manager. The 40-year-old uses a two-man. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is having to play a deeper role than his usual position as an attacking midfielder behind the striker.
All these have cast a doubt regarding the impact of the Portuguese midfielder on the team’s attacking output. In this regard, journalist Ben Jacobs has reported to The United Stand that the 30-year-old midfielder is not happy playing the role of a deeper midfielder under Amorim, although he respects the coach a lot. The change in tactics has reduced the attacking output of Fernandes, and he has had to focus on short passes to maintain possession rather than creating chances near the goal.
However, new signings Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo are playing in the front three under Amorim, and hence it has become difficult for Bruno to feature as an attacking midfielder behind the striker in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. The 30-year-old is not getting into the game, and hence, Jacobs has even suggested a formation or system that the Portuguese manager can use to introduce Bruno in his preferred position and increase his tally of goals and assists this season.
Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo has not received game time under Amorim, and he is reportedly unhappy at Old Trafford. We revealed earlier that the club faces internal conflict regarding the 20-year-old midfielder’s future.
“You have Bruno Fernandes, who I wouldn’t call unhappy with his manager. If anything, they’ve got a positive relationship; he’s the captain of the football club. But he’s unhappy with playing that deeper role.
“So this is where a 4-1-4-1 formation might allow you to play Kobbie Mainoo or Manuel Ugarte in a deeper role, Bruno Fernandes and one of Mbeumo or Cunha.
“And then the other, if it’s Mbeumo, it could be wide right, or Benjamin Sesko might not start every game, and Cunha can play as a number nine. Cunha can also play wide left.
“But in this current formation to bring in the goal power and really get the new signings going, Bruno Fernandes is deeper and is obviously either not as effective or not as content in that role.”
Fernandes’ deeper role has sparked debate about whether Amorim’s approach limits his captain’s strengths. Amorim’s focus on control and structure has clearly changed United’s rhythm. Fernandes, known for his forward passes and late runs, now spends more time linking defence and midfield. He gets more touches on the ball but has less impact. His reduced attacking returns with two goals in seven matches compared to eight in the previous league season reflect that shift clearly.
Amorim’s usage of Bruno as a defensive midfielder weakens United’s attack. Fernandes plays best when he can take risks, find spaces, and lead attacks from advanced areas. Amorim’s system focuses on control and stability, forcing Fernandes to adjust instead of playing freely. Even from deeper areas, his passing range helps him control the tempo and move the ball quickly.
As Amorim mixes experienced players with new arrivals, finding a balance between structure and creativity will stay key. Amid all these shifting pieces, Manchester United are keeping a watchful eye on emerging midfield star Kees Smit, as per reports.
