Manchester United want £72m star sold in favour of experienced replacement

The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell revealed that Manchester United star Rasmus Hojlund will leave the club despite contradictory past reports. The Red Devils have prioritised the attacking department during the early stages of the summer to implement the squad overhaul.

Ruben Amorim struggled to get the best out of the senior squad he inherited from Erik ten Hag last season. The Portuguese’s decision to stick with his tactical philosophy has been a mitigating factor, but United’s attack concerns are old.

Throughout Ten Hag’s reign, the Red Devils struggled to establish attacking players, contributing consistently for the team to remain competent. Amorim has focused on changing that immediately, which means taking ruthless decisions to get the right balance at the club.

The former Sporting CP boss has already signed Matheus Cunha and is edging close to completing the Bryan Mbeumo deal. However, the main number nine position remains an area of concern as United have a shortlist of forwards lined up.

We All Follow United recently covered one of those attackers, Ollie Watkins, who provides more experience compared to United’s options. Both Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have failed to establish themselves as consistently reliable number nines under Amorim at the club.

According to the Athletic journalist Whitwell (via Talk of the Devils podcast), United want to sell Hojlund despite the recent contradictory reports of Hojlund staying, which we previously covered. He said:

“I do think it is linked to Rasmus Hojlund’s future [Ollie Watkins links] if he goes. I’m speaking to people, and that’s perhaps more likely than not at this stage. Even a sale is more likely than a loan. We’ll see how it develops, but Inter are there firmly. If he goes, I can’t see how United can’t replace him. They would need an option and Ollie Watkins to my knowledge is one of those options.”

United signed Hojlund for £72m from Atalanta in the summer of 2023, a price that he has failed to justify. However, the Denmark international has a lot of potential, and under the right environment, he could thrive as a poacher.

Rest assured, United need more than just a long-term project at this point, as the short-term disruptions they’re causing are counter-productive. We have already covered how Hojlund’s valuation have plummeted to £29.5 million, leaving United in a tough selling position.
