Before his ill-fated move to Juventus, Douglas Luiz was widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest defensive midfielders. His performances at Aston Villa under multiple managers caught the eye of the division’s elite. Luiz’s blend of ball progression, ball-winning, and calm under pressure made him a key reason behind Villa’s rise into the top six conversation.
Arsenal made multiple attempts to sign him in the past, especially in the summer of 2022, but were ultimately rebuffed. Instead, Luiz made the surprising decision to join Juventus, as part of a swap-style deal involving Samuel Iling-Junior. That move, however, quickly turned sour.
Luiz’s transition to Serie A has been nothing short of a disaster. Tactically restricted and physically overwhelmed, Luiz struggled to adapt to Juventus’ rigid midfield structure and the slower, more methodical pace of Italian football. Despite expectations that his technical ability would shine, the Brazilian appeared out of sync in the system, where positioning and defensive discipline were prioritized over physical duels and transitional play.
The end result was a disastrous first and only season in Turin, where he failed to lock down a consistent starting role and saw his form nosedive. Now, Juventus are already prepared to move him on—and Premier League clubs are lining up to bring him back to a league that suits him far more naturally.
According to Relevo journalist Matteo Moretto, Manchester United have reignited talks with Douglas Luiz, having first explored a deal months ago. The report also claims Everton and Fulham are keen on Luiz, though United remain the most high-profile of the interested clubs.
The Red Devils are in the midst of a full midfield overhaul. The club is still targeting major signings, but they may need to turn to more realistic or cost-effective names to fill out the squad. Luiz, despite his Juventus flop, could represent exactly that: a player with high upside and Premier League experience who could rebound in the right setup.
There’s no denying that Douglas Luiz was a major disappointment at Juventus, and for that reason, some fans will question United’s renewed interest. But it’s equally undeniable that Luiz is a proven Premier League player. His strengths—aggression, ball recovery, and ball-carrying—fit better in the physical demands of English football than the tactical chess match of Serie A.
If Luiz is available for a reasonable fee, United could see him as a medium-risk, high-reward reclamation project. Under the right manager and with more freedom to play his natural game, Luiz could reemerge as one of the league’s better all-round midfielders.
Manchester United won’t have a free path to sign the Brazilian. Fulham and Everton are both monitoring his situation, and Juventus are clearly open to selling. Luiz is not the only midfield option on the market, and for United, there may be younger or more dynamic players available. But given their current desperation and the need to add experience and steel, Luiz remains a tempting fallback.
Douglas Luiz’s story in Italy may have crashed and burned, but his Premier League chapter might not be over just yet. Manchester United are watching closely—and they might just believe he can shine once more where he always looked most at home.
