Manchester United head into Sunday’s trip to face Leeds under pressure after a frustrating 1–1 draw with Wolves at Old Trafford.
A result that underlined ongoing attacking issues despite the presence of key forwards.
With just 33 goals scored in the Premier League so far this season, United’s lack of cutting edge has become a growing concern as they try to stay in touch with the European places.
In the wake of the draw, movement has begun behind the scenes, and one of United’s wide players has now taken a decisive step towards a January exit by agreeing personal terms with a Turkish club.
A development that reflects both the congestion in United’s attacking ranks and the club’s evolving approach to squad management.
Manchester United academy winger Sam Mather is edging closer to a January move away from Old Trafford after agreeing personal terms with Turkish side Kayserispor, according to Manchester World.
The 21-year-old is keen to secure a permanent exit this month, having been unable to finalise a move during the summer despite strong interest from clubs.
A switch to Kayserispor was already close on deadline day of the Turkish window, but negotiations broke down due to time constraints before paperwork could be completed.
He also held talks with Al Wahda FC last year, though that deal collapsed when the two clubs failed to agree on the structure of a potential sell-on clause.
A Salford native and boyhood United supporter, Mather rose through the club’s academy system and was part of the FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2022.
He signed his first professional contract in September 2021 and has regularly trained with the first team.
Mather spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Rochdale, where he scored twice in 10 appearances, before extending his United contract in the summer of 2024.
However, opportunities at the senior level have remained limited.
Mather joined Tranmere Rovers on loan at the start of the current campaign.
Now, with a move to Turkey firmly back on the table, Mather appears ready to take the next step in his career away from Manchester United.
