Manchester United Women crowned FA Cup champions as they claim first major trophy at Wembley

A stellar showing at Wembley has led to Manchester United Women claiming their first major trophy in the form of the FA Cup.

The Red Devils locked horns with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon in hopes of ending the campaign on a high following a somewhat lacklustre WSL season.

Alas, Marc Skinner’s side certainly put on a show for the travelling Reds in attendance, as they hit Spurs for four goals without any response.

Ella Toone broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with an absolutely scintillating strike from 25 yards out, which made its way straight to the top corner and was unsavable for Rebecca Spencer.

Shortly after the interval, two quickfire goals had United in cruise control with a 3-0 lead. Rachel Williams rose higher than anybody else in the area from a Katie Zelem free-kick and headed home to make it 2-0 in the 54th minute.

Just three minutes later, Lucia Garcia capitalised on a grave error from Spencer, intercepting a sloppy pass to slot it home from close range and leave the goalkeeper red-faced. The Spaniard sealed the victory – and her brace – in the closing stages of the tie, and she was deservedly named Player of the Match upon the full-time whistle.

Congratulations to the squad on a hard-earned maiden piece of silverware in the cabinet after such a triumphant run to the final.
