Hours after Manchester United announced forward Mason Greenwood was suspended indefinitely due to allegations of abuse, the forward was arrested Sunday.
"Greater Manchester Police was made aware earlier today of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence," a police statement reads, via Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic. "An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
"He remains in custody for questioning."
Greenwood, 20, came under fire when his girlfriend shared graphic images of injuries in since-deleted social media posts that she says were caused by Greenwood. In an audio clip, a man who she claims is Greenwood can be heard demanding sex from his unwilling girlfriend.
Manchester United released a statement early Sunday saying the team was aware of the images and allegations circulating social media. The team later announced Greenwood would be barred from practices and matches until further notice.
Greenwood has been a member of Manchester United's senior squad since 2018 and has appeared in 83 career matches with the club and scored 22 goals.
