15 goals conceded in ten Premier League games. An average of 1.5 goals conceded per match. A defence in desperate need of reinforcements.
The upcoming January transfer window gives Manchester United the perfect opportunity to sign players in defensive positions, more specifically the centre-back position.
Reports from Manchester Evening News reporter Tyrone Marshall have suggested United’s interest in signing an individual in the left-back position, although it remains unclear whether such a move will be made in the centre-back position,
Should the Red Devils decide in favour of an incoming in the centre-back position, one of the following three options could be among those considered.*
The 24-year-old Belgium international has been on Manchester United’s radar since March 2025, where reports suggested that the club were monitoring the centre-back.
Further such reports emerged this week implying interested from United once again, although the club may face tough competition from Liverpool and Chelsea.
And from the ten Serie A games he has played so far this season, it is clear to see why so many clubs are interested in de Winter. 81 defensive contributions, 16 tackles, and 13 interceptions highlight his defensive capabilities.
He has played in each of AC Milan’s eleven league games so far this season, establishing himself as an important option in a side that has lost just one league game so far this season.
His ability to read the game, make timely challenges, and ensure defensive stability could make him an attractive option to Manchester United in the January transfer window. At 24, he also offers a combination of experience and potential, with plenty of years still ahead of him.
United’s need for greater consistency in defensive situations cannot be understated, and de Winter could represent an opportunity to bring in a defender capable of delivering that.
With several other Premier League teams currently interested in the central defender, alongside Manchester United, however, securing his signature could be a hard task.
Collins is another talented central defender from the Bundesliga that has caught Manchester United’s eye in the past, with him currently developing at Eintracht Frankfurt.
At 6ft 2in, the 22-year-old offers an impressive physical profile, something that could be imperative when competing against some of the Premier League’s strongest forwards.
His pace is another valuable attribute, adding to his overall gameplay whilst subsequently making him a more attractive option for clubs looking to improve across their backline.
When comparing Collins and de Winter, one clear thing stands out: versatility. Whilst the latter plays primarily in the centre-back position, Collins has previously demonstrated his ability to play at right-back, possibly giving United more flexibility in defensive positions.
That versatility could prove pivotal to Michael Carrick, given the large range of competitions the club may be competing in during the second half of this season.
At 22, Collins arguably fits the model of a player that may develop further over the coming years.
With Manchester United potentially needing a more immediate solution, though, de Winter could prove to be a more straightforward solution.
At 18, Nijstad, who has emerged as one of FC Twente’s most promising talents, represents the youngest of the three options on this list, having already stood out to Manchester United.
Operating as a naturally left-footed central defender, the Dutch youth international offers a slightly different profile to both de Winter and Collins. He has also played at left-back for Twente, providing a similar level of versatility to Collins.
That ability to operate on his left side could be especially useful to Manchester United, particularly if Michael Carrick chooses to focus on developing his side’s capabilities when playing out from the back.
Nijstad arguably represents the greatest long-term investment of the three, with the potential to develop into an important first-team player His progression could follow a similar pathway to that supporters have seen with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.
At just 18, though, expecting him to solve United’s defensive frailties would arguably be unrealistic.
Instead, he would like need time to adapt to the demands of English football and continue his development before becoming a regular senior option.
All three defenders ultimately offer something different, but United’s priority should be finding an individual capable of improving their defence immediately.
De Winter arguably fits that model best, with Collins offering versatility and Nijstad representing a optimistic long-term investment.
With January approaching, Manchester United must decide whether to prioritise immediate improvements or invest in defensive talent for the future.
Given their struggles at the back so far this season, strengthening their defensive options could prove crucial to their ambitions.
