Manuel Ugarte bizarrely avoids red card against England

Manuel Ugarte has struggled lately to establish himself in the Manchester United side, yet still managed his routine call-up for Uruguay during the March international break.

Since arriving at Old Trafford in summer 2024 under Erik ten Hag from PSG for £42.2 million, the midfielder has failed to impress, even when serving under former coach Ruben Amorim.

The pair had worked at Sporting CP together, however the Portuguese manager commented on how Ugarte wasn’t the same player he trained in Lisbon.

Since Amorim was sacked in January 2026 and Michael Carrick was appointed as caretaker manager, the 24-year-old has been used even less.

Under Carrick, Manuel Ugarte has racked up 70 minutes of gametime across 6 games, yet still got an international call-up for Uruguay’s friendly against England.

However, at first glance, it didn’t appear to go to plan as the defensive midfielder appeared to get two yellow cards, yet received no red for the double booking.

To start with, Ugarte received a yellow in the first half for a foul, before then receiving his second yellow in the second half for dissent.

Referee Sven Jablonski failed to give a red card on the second appearance of the yellow card, with Ugarte being substituted off in the 87th minute.

After the game, ITV host Mark Pougatch commented that the initial yellow was actually for Jose Maria Gimenez, and the second yellow was actually rescinded.
