Austria International Marcel Sabitzer believes he gave a good account of himself during his short loan at Manchester United last season after completing a transfer to Borussia Dortmund.

The midfielder says he proved doubters wrong during his time at Old Trafford and the move helped boost his confidence.

Sabitzer scored three goals in 18 appearances for Reds, but his season ended prematurely by a knee injury which meant Erik ten Hag never considered keeping the Austrian beyond his loan.

However, Sabitzer moved to a new club instead of staying at Bayern Munich under Thomas Tuchel. He has joined Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in a summer switch.

Speaking to BVB club media, Sabitzer said (as per Manchester Evening News): “I remember a lot of things from my time at Manchester United.

“I was very impressed by the fact of having played for a club of such stature. I had a smile every day at the thought of being there and playing.

“It’s also because I had playing time [at United] that I found my rhythm and my self-confidence. I showed good things there and that has an impact because a year and a half ago everyone doubted me. When you can prove again that you can play a part in big clubs like this, it’s good for confidence.”

Sabitzer couldn’t settle at Bayern and I don’t think he did quite enough to convince Ten Hag to keep him. That said, he’s a very good footballer and BVB have got someone who will make a difference should he stay fit.

United’s next pre-season game is against Borussia Dortmund in the US.
