Marcos Rojo goes on strike to rejoin club

Marcos Rojo spent six-and-a-half years at Manchester United, becoming a cult favourite whose uncompromising style made him difficult to forget.

Louis van Gaal signed the Argentina international from Sporting CP for £16 million in 2014 after his performances at that summer’s World Cup.

Injuries regularly interrupted his Old Trafford career, but Rojo still accumulated 122 appearances and collected three major trophies.

He lifted the FA Cup in 2016 before United completed a League Cup and Europa League double under Jose Mourinho the following season.

Rojo eventually left United permanently in 2021, although his connection with the club has remained strong.

He has previously spoken fondly about his years in Manchester and the supporters who embraced his aggressive approach.

Now 36, Rojo has recently been linked with another emotional reunion.

He is reportedly so determined to secure the move that he has taken drastic action against his current employers.

Marcos Rojo refuses to train as he pushes for return

Manchester Evening News reports that Rojo is refusing to train with Racing Club as he attempts to force through a return to Estudiantes.

The defender began his career with Estudiantes, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2009 and Argentina’s Primera Division the following year.

He also briefly returned there on loan from United in 2020.

Rojo held direct talks with Racing president Diego Milito on Tuesday after repeatedly communicating his desire to leave.

The discussion reportedly became heated, with neither party changing its position.

Estudiantes are now seeking defensive reinforcement ahead of their Copa Libertadores semi-final against Flamengo, with two centre-backs suspended.

Rojo’s Racing contract expires at the end of 2026, but the club have not agreed to terminate it.

The latest development represents a significant escalation after talks over Rojo rejoining familiar surroundings emerged earlier this week.

For Rojo, the objective is clear: finish his career where it all began.
