Marcos Rojo in talks to rejoin club

Marcos Rojo once represented the sort of chaos Manchester United supporters could somehow fall in love with.

Signed from Sporting CP in 2014 after reaching the World Cup final with Argentina, Rojo spent nearly seven years at Old Trafford.

He was aggressive, front-footed and rarely interested in taking the safer option.

There was quality behind the fire too.

Rojo made 122 appearances for United, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League before eventually leaving in 2021.

United’s defence now looks very different.

Matthijs de Ligt provides experience, while Lisandro Martinez brings aggression and Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven represent the future.

Yet Rojo possessed a confrontational edge that United can still appear to lack when games become ugly.

That temperament occasionally crossed the line, however, with CentreDevils reporting in April that he was sent off after striking an opponent while playing for Racing Club.

Now, at 36, Rojo is discussing another move – and remarkably, it could take him back somewhere extremely familiar.

Marcos Rojo could complete emotional return

According to ESPN, Estudiantes de La Plata have opened talks with Rojo’s representatives over bringing the defender back to the club where his career began.

Estudiantes want him available for their Copa Libertadores semi-final against Flamengo and are attempting to reach an agreement with Racing over his departure.

Rojo progressed through Estudiantes’ youth system before making his senior breakthrough, helping them win the 2009 Copa Libertadores and the Argentine league in 2010.

He has already returned once before, making a brief loan move from United in 2020, although injury restricted him to a single appearance.

Rojo is currently Racing’s captain and has a contract running until December.

ESPN reports he is speaking with club president Diego Milito about his situation, although Racing are reluctant to lose him during a difficult period.

For Rojo, however, another Estudiantes return would offer the possibility of finishing his career exactly where it started.
