Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona future relies on presidential election

Marcus Rashford’s season-long loan has been tipped to become a permanent move, however the upcoming presidential election could have a huge impact on this.

The Manchester United attacker has been in incredible form since arriving at Camp Nou.

After a short loan with Aston Villa, Rashford joined the La Liga champions in the summer, instantly fitting into the team.

With ten goals and 13 assists in 34 games, Rashford has the second-highest goal contributions this season in Hansi Flick’s side, only five goals behind Lamine Yamal.

As such, it’s no real surprise that Flick wants to retain the attacker, with the Barcelona executives greenlighting the move, given his optional buy clause of £26 million.

However, The Times has reported that the mid-March presidential election could drastically affect things.

Current president Joan Laporta is up against Victor Font for the role, and while both men are looking to retain Hansi Flick, the setup for executives could well change under Font.

Laporta has been successfully in charge since 2021, with Barca winning four trophies in the last ten months since Flick was appointed by the Barca president.

While Laporta would also look to stand by the director of football, Deco, it’s understood that Font would not be backing the Barca legend.

With Deco being a key part in green-lighting the Rashford move, this could have a massive impact for the England international’s future at the club.

However, given Barcelona’s recent Spanish Super Cup victory, their five wins in six El Classico’s, currently sitting at the top of La Liga defending their title, it’s hard to imagine that anything is set to change.
