Mason Greenwood has been a standout player for Marseille so far this season with the 24-year-old coming into good form as the French outfit approach the closing stages of the season.

Greenwood, who joined Marseille in 2024, scored once again on Saturday to surpass his total of 22 goals last season and to set his new professional record.

With the French media reacting positively to this and his performance in general, it is arguably clear to see his reputation in the local media.

However, there has been underlying tension during this season with the club facing uncertainty surrounding its own future.

Firstly, Roberto De Zerbi was sacked with links to a potential move to Manchester United present currently.

The departure of De Zerbi, who had been with Marseille for nearly two years before his sacking, has created speculation and outside noise throughout the last week.

Now, via his Instagram page, Marseille’s Director of Football Medhi Benatia has resigned from his post at the club.

In his resignation post, he stated: “I am leaving with the feeling that I have done my utmost on a professional level, but with regret that I have not been able to calm the environment around the team.

“Despite recent setbacks and some cruel sporting scenarios, the project is moving forward.

“But I cannot ignore the current climate. I feel a growing dissatisfaction, a rift that I deeply regret. In Marseille, results are the only judge.”

Medhi Benatia and Mason Greenwood were reported to openly ignore each other with the former Director of Football a vocal critic of the 24-year-old.

With Benatia’s departure now confirmed, both relief and uncertainty will arise for Greenwood whilst speculation will also be present as the club approaches the closing stages of the season.
