Manchester United’s midfield rebuild this summer has been shaped by more than just outgoing business and fresh recruitment.
Casemiro’s departure left an obvious gap for Michael Carrick to fill, and United moved swiftly to address it, agreeing a £50million deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos before following up with a £35million move for Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans.
Even with those additions, United weren’t quite finished, with a deal for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba reported to be closing in as a third and final piece of the rebuild.
Mason Mount had briefly looked like he might reduce the need for further recruitment, impressing enough in pre-season to convince some inside the club that he could occupy a deeper midfield role this season.
That plan hit a snag when Mason Mount picked up an injury against Paris Saint-Germain during pre-season, initially reported as a problem with his foot.
According to The Athletic, scans have since revealed the issue is in fact a hamstring injury, rather than the foot problem first suspected.
While the injury alone wasn’t enough on its own to completely change United’s transfer strategy, it served as a timely reminder of Mount’s fitness struggles, adding fresh urgency to the club’s pursuit of Baleba.
Since his £55million move from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, Mount has rarely stayed fit for any extended period, missing well over 30 games across his time at Old Trafford through a string of different issues.
His first season alone brought a hamstring injury in August, a pelvis problem, and a lengthy muscle injury that ruled him out for almost four months between November and March.
The following campaign offered little respite, with a head injury sustained against Tottenham, a thigh problem that kept him out from December to March, and further muscle issues along the way.
Mount did show signs of building fitness and form during patches of last season, but has already picked up further knocks since, underlining just how disruptive his time at United has been.
The hope will be that this latest hamstring setback proves to be a minor one rather than another lengthy spell on the sidelined list that has become all too familiar since his move from Chelsea.
