Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has said that players have noticed one thing about Ruben Amorim during his first pre-season at the club.
Now guiding Manchester United through his first full pre-season, Amorim is settling into life at Old Trafford following a chaotic 2024–25 campaign.
The 40-year-old Portuguese manager stepped in last October after the club parted ways with Erik ten Hag amid mounting pressure and poor results.
He took over in November and couldn’t steer them above 15th place, with results never really improving across the season.
The former Sporting CP coach also missed out on silverware, with United falling short in May’s Europa League final against Tottenham, losing 1-0.
Ruben Amorim and his squad got their pre-season tour underway last week, with Manchester United and Leeds playing out a goalless draw at the Strawberry Arena.
After the friendly against Leeds in Solna, United have now turned their attention to the American leg of their pre-season schedule.
After coming off the bench in the second half to replace new arrival Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount spoke to The Daily Mail about manager Ruben Amorim’s meticulous nature, praising the way he obsesses over the finer points of preparation.
“He [Amorim] is massive on details, the small improvements on the pitch or off the pitch, and he’s been really, really big on that,” Mount said.
“As a group, we know what we need to do in those areas because we need to be performing to the best of our ability.
“It’s important with any new season to set new goals, especially coming off last season.”
United were exposed by set-pieces throughout the 2024-25 Premier League season, and Mount says the team is working to address that issue now.
“The set-pieces now in the Premier League are so big and teams are really, really focusing on that.
“I think at the beginning, we struggled with that a little bit and we conceded probably too many goals.
“That affects games when they are so tight and you get a set-piece and you can see maybe from a corner, say, it has a big effect on the game and then you’re chasing it again.
“That happened to us quite a bit and that’s something that we obviously looked at already and trying to improve on.”
The Red Devils will spend part of July and August in the United States, where they’re scheduled to play pre-season matches against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton.
