Mateus Fernandes joined the Hammers from Southampton last summer in a deal worth an initial £38 million, with the Saints also inserting a 15% sell-on clause into the agreement.

During his debut campaign in East London, he registered 5 goals and 5 assists across 40 appearances, underlining his growing influence in midfield.

West Ham’s relegation to the Championship has now significantly altered their position, with the club understood to be open to selling key assets in order to balance their finances.

That situation has opened the door for Manchester United to accelerate their interest and move ahead of rival clubs in the race for his signature.

Arsenal had been monitoring Fernandes closely in recent weeks, but are reluctant to meet the valuation required to complete a deal.
