Matheus Cunha was back in the Manchester United starting eleven and completed the full match in their win over Liverpool.

Ruben Amorim made a few eye-catching changes to the United line-up for the trip to Anfield, including swapping out Benjamin Sesko for Cunha.

It was an inspired decision, as Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire found the net to help United seal a historic 2-1 victory, their first at Anfield in nearly 10 years.

Cunha hasn’t contributed a goal or assist yet this season, but his overall play on Merseyside showed why he’s trusted by Amorim. He linked up well with Kobbie Mainoo and helped drive play forward throughout the game.

Cunha’s ability to connect midfield and attack has quickly made him a key figure for United. His strong performance away from home could be what he needs to kickstart his season from here on out.

He joined in the celebrations after full-time and later took to social media, posting a message for fans following his return to the starting line-up.

“All about hard work and passion, what a team,” Cunha wrote on Instagram. Joshua Zirkzee replied with “Crackkk”, while others including Leny Yoro, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo also showed their support by liking the post.

Matheus Cunha can build on Liverpool display

Despite an injury-hit start to his United career, Cunha can be considered a transfer success based on his start at the club this season.

The Brazilian’s performances offer so much more than just goals or assists. His all-round play and ability on the ball makes him a huge asset for United.

It is only a matter of time until Cunha finds the back of the net, but frankly, Amorim will be asking him for more of the same. Against Liverpool, his protection of the ball and ability to beat a player was worth as much as a goal.

With upcoming games against Brighton and Nottingham Forest, Cunha will hope to build some momentum in United’s starting XI, although it seems he faces fierce competition from the likes of Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko for a spot.
