Matheus Cunha has officially joined Manchester United and has now given his first interview since the signing was announced.
Ineos have kicked off their summer business with a major move, securing Cunha from Wolves in a deal worth £62.5 million.
And Cunha has already spoken glowingly about Manchester United, with his excitement clear in the photos shared by the club after his move was confirmed on Thursday.
On Instagram, Cunha called the transfer a “dream come true”, finally securing the move he’d long hoped for.
The deal always felt inevitable, especially after Cunha was spotted talking with Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford back in April. Now, he’s back at the stadium again, this time as a United player, taking part in media duties and his first official interview.
United released Cunha’s first official interview on Friday, and one moment in particular stood out – his remarks about Bruno Fernandes.
When asked if there were any teammates he was especially looking forward to playing with, Cunha started mentioning his Brazilian friend Casemiro:
“Yeah, of course, I play with Casemiro for Brazil, I’m so grateful to play with him. He was the one who always helped me in the national team. I started young there, and he always had good words to push me forward, but now it is easier to be with him.”
However, Cunha didn’t stop with his words about the defensive midfielder. He also highlighted his new captain, Bruno Fernandes:
“We know that for every squad, Bruno is, I think, for everyone in the Premier League, he is a great example of how to wear the shirt of a club, and you feel the passion inside of him, of course. They are two big examples, and when I am here, I always like watching United players.”
There’s every reason to think Fernandes will be thrilled with United’s newest arrival. Both players have similar on-field qualities: energy, intelligence, and an ability to lead by example.
For too long, Fernandes has carried much of the creative burden at United on his own. Now, he might finally have a teammate who sees the game the same way he does, and who can share the weight in big moments.
It could be the start of an exciting partnership, one that gives United a new edge heading into the season.
