Manchester United returned from the international break looking like a side slowly rediscovering rhythm under Ruben Amorim.
Their five-match unbeaten run has lifted the mood at Old Trafford after a turbulent start to the season.
A big part of that resurgence has come from the improved structure and fluidity in the front line.
Matheus Cunha has been one of the main catalysts for that change since arriving from Wolves for £62.5 million in the summer.
The Brazilian has only scored once in his 11 United appearances, but his value in Amorim’s system goes far beyond goals.
His movement between the lines, pressing intensity, link-up play and ability to play as a false nine have become essential to how United builds attacks.
Cunha’s combinations with Bryan Mbeumo have been especially important in recent weeks, helping United generate more control and threat in the final third.
Amorim has grown increasingly reliant on Cunha’s tactical intelligence, describing him as one of the players who “brought confidence to the squad” earlier this month.
United’s attacking balance has gradually improved with Cunha leading the line.
That progress made the events at Carrington on Saturday an unwelcome setback.
Cunha suffered an accident during training, leaving the coaching staff concerned ahead of Monday’s match against Everton.
The injury scare arrived at the worst time, given Benjamin Šeško’s ongoing absence and United’s thinning forward options.
And now the main story unfolds—as the club awaits medical clarity and fans brace for another potential blow.
Manchester United are sweating on the fitness of Matheus Cunha after the forward picked up an injury in training on Saturday.
United face Everton on Monday and are already without Benjamin Šeško, making Cunha’s potential absence a major concern.
The Brazilian had been expected to play as a false No. 9 in Šeško’s absence, with Ruben Amorim preparing to rely on him in attack.
The update alarmed United fans, especially as Šeško, Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo were also missing from Friday’s training session.
Cunha had only suffered a “minor knock”, which sounded less worrying than an “accident”, according to ESPN.
Despite that, Cunha remains a doubt for the Everton game and will be assessed ahead of Monday night’s kick-off.
Amorim said on Friday: “He is going to be a few weeks out. Not that serious, we have to be careful. He is feeling better.”
The manager also confirmed Maguire is unavailable, saying: “Maguire is not ready. Kobbie didn’t train today but I think we could see Kobbie tomorrow so we’ll see.”
Amorim added: “There is an opportunity for other players like the under-21s. We will see it is not ideal. They are so important in our team.”
They could climb into the top four by the end of the weekend if results elsewhere go in their favour.
