Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has been under tremendous pressure to change the fortunes of the club this season. Well, the Australian did manage to do that after ending the North London club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy last week. His team beat Manchester United in the Europa League final to ensure silverware was heading back to N17.
The ex-Celtic boss became just the third Spurs manager to win a European trophy. It was a historic night for everyone involved with the club and it certainly raised the chances of Big Ange staying at the helm beyond this season. The gamble to focus solely on the Europa League in the latter stages of the campaign certainly paid off as the Lilywhites ensured Champions League qualification with it as well.
It is important to note that Ange’s men finished the Premier League campaign just a place above the relegation zone. They also failed to reach the 40-point mark in the league and registered 22 losses along the way. However, the fans will not care one bit about the domestic campaign as Spurs won European silverware after 41 years of heartbreak and near misses.
The performance in the Europa League final showed how much the players wanted to win the trophy for their manager. There should not be a doubt in anyone’s mind that the players back Ange Postecoglou. There has a constant support from the dressing room for Big Ange to turn the club’s fortunes around and winning the Europa League has just showcased that.
Now, James Maddison has also taken the time out to praise Ange Postecoglou’s management. Speaking to Sky Sports News, Maddison said,
“Yeah, he’s been brilliant. Even at the start of the season, saying ‘I don’t usually win things [in my second season], I always win things’. It’s one of them, we knew that would create a big uproar in the media, with you lot never shutting up about it. But never once did I stop believing that he meant that. The season three line, that was iconic as well.”
The England international added,
“He’s got them in the locker, them motivational mic drop moments. Managers and clubs can go long periods without winning trophies, but he’s a man who’s always had success. His biggest strength is his self-belief in what he does, and that feeds off into us. That’s been installed into us in Europe this year in all of the away games, even the ones in the group stage.”
James Maddison suggested that Ange Postecoglou’s promise to win a trophy in his second season created a bit of uproar in the media, but the players backed him to achieve that. The England international also insisted that Big Ange has the tendency to motivate the players in a brilliant way. Maddison also praised Ange’s self-belief and suggested that the Australian’s confidence in the players reflected in the Europa League performances away from home this season.
Despite the Europa League success this season, Ange Postecoglou is facing an uncertain future at N17. It was reported earlier that Daniel Levy was leaning towards sacking the Australian after the final, but fans believe that the Spurs chairman is rethinking his decision to relieve Big Ange from his duties.
Spurs have already lined up several candidates to potentially replace the ex-Celtic boss for next season. Former Ajax boss Francesco Farioli and Fulham manager Marco Silva are linked with the club to takeover the reigns in the summer. It remains to be seen what decision Daniel Levy takes regarding the managerial situation at N17.
