Over the last year, Mason Mount has had glimpses of the brilliance that earned him his move to Old Trafford from Chelsea three years ago.
Unfortunately for the former England international, however, his impressive play has often been hindered by injury, especially during his time with Manchester United.
Since his move from Stamford Bridge, Mount has missed 55 games, with the 27-year-old once more in the Carrington treatment room.
At the end of January 2026, Mount unfortunately took a knock in training when preparing for the clash with Fulham and has been out of action since.
However, caretaker manager Michael Carrick has now issued a positive update, with the attacking midfielder set to return soon.
Speaking ahead of United’s clash with Crystal Palace, Carrick commented: “Mason is getting closer really.”
He continued: “He’s on the grass and he’s getting closer, he’s looking to train and be in around it pretty soon.
“He’s getting close. He’s just had to be patient really and he’s a big player so we’re looking after him, making sure he’s ready for a big finish to the season.
“The good news is he’s getting really close.”
Being back to training on the grass is often one of the final steps in a player’s recovery, making it a great sign we’ll see Mason Mount back in March 2026.
Carrick went on to give an update on fellow injured teammate Matthijs de Ligt, explaining: “Matthijs, he’s had a back issue, which has been a little bit slower to progress really.”
He continued: “It’s something we’ve been working through and he’s getting there. He’s in the right direction but, as I said, he’s just a little bit further behind.
“It’s one of those things that’s disappointing but it’s just a part of football unfortunately, so we’ll get him back when we can.
“It’s just the nature of the injury and the issue in the back. It’s a difficult one to pin down, especially time-wise.
“He’s definitely improving, so that’s a good thing and we’re just working towards that really. There’s not much more I can give at this stage.”
As such, United will hopefully be back to full force soon enough, with Lisandro Martinez also known to be returning soon, making Patrick Dorgu the final long-term injury.
