After yet another week of Premier League action, Manchester United sit 18th in the Premier League table.
Aston Villa’s visit to Old Trafford posed a new opportunity after an excellent comeback victory against AS Roma in midweek, but United failed to impress once again.
No side in Europe’s top five leagues has conceded more goals than the Red Devils so far this season, following their four goals shipped against the Villans in a 4-4 draw.
United went two-nil down after just four minutes of the match, and the game showed signs of becoming a bloodbath.
Michael Carrick’s side fought back to 2-2 by half-time, showing good spirit, but Aston Villa restored their two-goal lead in under ten minutes of the second period.
For the second time in the week, more drama ensued, as injury time Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu goals ended the game 4-4.
Fans inside the Theatre of Dreams appeared unsure whether to act jubilantly at full-time or annoyed, given how the game had gone.
This reaction was reciprocated by Carrick and his players on the pitch, who looked bewildered by what had just happened.
United will now reportedly assess Michael Carrick’s future over the international break, after choosing against sacking their head coach a couple of weeks ago.
Carrick’s position was going to be reviewed off the back of games against Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa. United have won just one of these, conceding nine times in the process.
For a Manchester United manager, this is understandably unacceptable, and senior figures at United will surely call an end to Carrick’s time in charge now.
With a two-week break, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada, Christopher Vivell and members of the club’s hierarchy will have time to chew over their next steps, and any potential next head coaches.
A decision must be made ahead of the busiest period of the season – the Christmas fixture list, and up after the international break for Manchester United is a trip to play Liverpool at Anfield.
Our verdict on Michael Carrick is that he will be sacked, but watch this space for what decision United come to during their scheduled internal talks.
