Michael Farrell leaves Manchester United

Manchester United have continued to undergo significant changes as the club looks to build a stronger structure around its football operations.

The Reds have made a number of changes to their staff in recent years, with several new positions being created as part of an attempt to improve standards across the club.

A major focus has also been placed on player development, performance and wellbeing, particularly with United looking to create a clearer pathway between the academy and first-team.

Those areas have become increasingly important at Old Trafford, with the club looking beyond what happens on the pitch when it comes to developing players and creating the right environment for success.

One figure who had been heavily involved in those areas had been at United for more than a decade, working across several important roles before taking on a newly created position.

Michael Farrell leaves Manchester United

Manchester United have now seen Michael Farrell leave the club after 11 years, bringing an end to his time as the first-ever Head of Football Culture and Development.

Michael Farrell joined United in 2015 and initially spent three years as an Academy Performance Consultant before becoming Head of Academy Performance, a role he held for around four-and-a-half years.

He was then appointed Head of Player Wellbeing in February 2023 before being promoted to the newly created Head of Football Culture and Development position in 2025.

His work at United was focused heavily on performance, player wellbeing, culture and development, while his previous career had also seen him work with Bury, Preston North End, Oxford United, Wigan Warriors and Sale Sharks.

At Preston, Farrell helped implement a high-performance structure, while his work at Oxford included helping develop the club’s performance department.

His time with Wigan Warriors was particularly notable, with Farrell involved in developing performance strategies designed to create a winning culture during a hugely successful period for the rugby league side.

The decision to create a Head of Culture role at United was also significant, with Farrell becoming the first person to hold the position at Old Trafford, although the club did not initially make his exact responsibilities public.

Farrell has now confirmed his departure himself, with the former United figure taking to LinkedIn to reflect on his 11 years at the club.

“After 11 amazing years at Manchester United, the time feels right to begin a new chapter.

“It would be impossible to capture in a few words what it has meant to work for a club of this scale, history and significance.

“Manchester United has been far more than an employer to me; it has been an environment that has challenged me, developed me and given me experiences I could never have anticipated when I first walked through the door in 2015.

“Over the years I have had the privilege of working alongside exceptional people across the club—people whose commitment, talent and impact aren’t always visible from the outside, but who make Manchester United what it is every day.

“My time at Manchester United reinforced something I have believed throughout my career: sustained performance is never created by talent alone. It is shaped by character, relationships, standards and persistence.

“I leave feeling enormously proud and grateful to those who trusted me in my various roles at the club, and richer for the friendships and experiences of the past decade.

“My next chapter will see me build an independent advisory and consultancy practice, drawing on my 25 years in elite sport and my experience in leadership, culture, and executive development.

“I look forward to continuing to work with leaders and organisations where there is ambition, challenge, and a desire to realise more of their potential.

“But for now, I simply want to say thank you to the colleagues, players, and friends I’ve met along the way; and wish everyone at the club every success for this season and beyond.

“It has been an extraordinary privilege.”

Farrell’s departure reportedly came at the end of last season, with the decision understood to have been made as he looked for a new challenge.
