Everton have been active in the market this summer as they look to strengthen key areas of the squad ahead of the new season.

One of their priorities has been adding more quality and control in midfield after a demanding campaign.

Talks with Championship sides over emerging talent have been ongoing for several weeks, with several bids already tested and rejected.

The Toffees have been persistent in their approach to get the signing of Hayden Hackney over the line, gradually improving their offers as negotiations developed.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, have been reluctant to part ways with their captain, who has been central to their rise as a competitive force in the Championship.

Their valuation of him remained firm throughout early discussions, especially after an outstanding individual season that saw him emerge as one of the division’s standout performers.

With just a year remaining on his contract, however, pressure has been building to reach a decision on Hayden Hackney’s future rather than risk a reduced fee later down the line.

Everton reach agreement for Hayden Hackney

According to Ben Jacobs, via X, Everton have reached an agreement worth £25m with Middlesbrough for Hayden Hackney, bringing an end to the long-running saga.

Earlier proposals, including bids in the region of £7m and £18m, were firmly rejected before a compromise was finally struck.

The midfielder’s consistent performances, including a key role in Middlesbrough’s run to the Championship play-off final where they fell to Hull City, ultimately justified the increased valuation.

Hackney’s rise has not gone unnoticed across the Premier League, with several clubs tracking his progress over the past season.

Among them was Manchester United, who had included him in their midfield discussions.

Michael Carrick, in particular, was known to be an admirer after working closely with him during his time at Middlesbrough and had advocated for midfield reinforcements of his profile.

Carrick’s influence in United’s recruitment planning saw Hackney considered as a potential long-term option, although the club’s priorities have since shifted.

Despite Everton winning the race for his signature, United are not expected to be significantly disrupted by the development.
