Premier League powerhouse Arsenal FC will return to the United States this summer as the opponent for MLS stars in the league All-Star Game in Washington, the league said Tuesday.
The All-Star Game has been an American soccer fixture since 1996. It began as a showdown featuring the top players from each MLS conference, but it later evolved to showcase the best of the league against strong international opponents. Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have played in the annual fixture.
Arsenal's lone appearance in the All-Star Game came in 2016, when it defeated the MLS stars, 2-1.
The MLS All-Star lineup has yet to be announced, but it will be led by Wayne Rooney, the D.C. United's English coach.
"I've had a front row seat to watch the growth and development of Major League Soccer, first as a player and now as a manager," Rooney said. "The opportunity to lead the best our league has to offer against a top Premier League club like Arsenal will be a highlight for me personally and an unforgettable experience for our passionate fanbase here in D.C."
This will be Washington's first time hosting the MLS All-Star Game since 2004. It's one of the top soccer markets in the country, consistently ranking in the top five metro areas for Premier League and U.S. Men's National Team television viewership.
The city is a strong choice for the All-Star Game---especially after FIFA denied D.C. the opportunity to host a World Cup game in 2026.
Arsenal aims to play the MLS All-Stars as Premier League champion. It leads the league by eight points with just 10 matches remaining.
The MLS All-Star Game will take place July 19 and will be aired worldwide via Apple TV.
