Liverpool fans have long feared Mohamed Salah's departure, and speculation over a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League has intensified over the past year. Clubs such as Al-Hilal have expressed strong interest in the Egyptian star, and with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, uncertainty over his future remains a central talking point.
Salah has been instrumental for Liverpool this season, scoring 25 goals and providing 17 assists in the Premier League. His influence was displayed again in Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United, which pushed the Reds 13 points clear at the top of the table. With second-place Arsenal dropping points in a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool’s 20th league title now feels inevitable.
Yet, as Liverpool edges closer to domestic glory, speculation over Salah’s future continues to grow. In a recent interview with TNT Sports, the 32-year-old sat down with club legend Steve McManaman, who pressed him for an update on contract negotiations.
"In a very polite way, no,” Salah admitted when asked if there had been progress on an extension. "I gave it all to the city. I was here, I wasn't lazy, I just enjoyed my football and gave it all.”
"I think that's what the city is about — they give you love and you have a connection with them because you give your all. I just want them to remember that I was here for eight years and I gave it all."
Salah’s comments, particularly his use of the past tense, have left many fans concerned. However, given that English is not his first language, some may hesitate to read too much into his phrasing. Nevertheless, his departure appears to be a real possibility.
Arriving at Liverpool in June 2017 for an initial £36.5 million, Salah has proven to be a shrewd piece of business. The Egyptian has emerged as a cornerstone of the club’s success, scoring 241 goals in 388 appearances and playing a pivotal role in securing major silverware, including the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League and the 2019-20 Premier League title.
Liverpool has 10 Premier League games remaining this season, while Arsenal has one more. The Reds will be eager to secure the title as soon as possible. Before the celebrations begin, they must navigate a challenging Champions League round-of-16 first-leg clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, March 5.
