Former President Massimo Moratti has accused Inter of inviting bad luck by talking about the Treble. ‘It wasn’t an obsession for us and we never talked about it’ in 2010.

The Nerazzurri managed the extraordinary feat under Jose Mourinho in 2010 of winning the Scudetto, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League in the same season.

“I was enthusiastic the day of the Treble, but I got the impression the sensation was different from what you’d expect it to be,” Moratti told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“You achieved a result that you thought would be more difficult. As soon as you win, the thoughts automatically go to what is next. Achieving the seemingly impossible actually takes away some of your happiness.”

Inter’s mood at the time was also tinged by the fact they knew Mourinho was going to leave for a new experience at Real Madrid.

Treble dream falls apart for Inter

They were hoping to repeat it this term with Simone Inzaghi, but that hope was already eliminated after their 3-0 Coppa Italia semi-final defeat to Milan.

Now they risk being left empty-handed, falling three points behind Napoli in the Serie A table, while Barcelona are on fine form ahead of the Champions League semi-final.

“What I find very strange is that there was so much talk about the Treble,” noted Moratti.

“In my day, you never talked about the Treble. When we won, that is when we realised it was a Treble. It was not an obsession the way it is now.”

In the space of eight days, Inter have seen their entire campaign fall apart, losing three consecutive matches between Serie A and the Coppa Italia, without scoring a single goal.

“The defeat in the Coppa Italia was very disappointing,” added Moratti.

“Inter suffered from confusion over the many objectives, there is a bit of fatigue, so I think Napoli have a better chance of winning the Serie A title. It’s all thanks to Antonio Conte, of course.”
