Arsenal are gearing up for an ‘important’ summer transfer window, with several positions in need of reinforcements.
This includes the attack as well as the midfield which are said to be at the top of the club’s agenda as they aim to mount a serious Premier League title challenge next season.
The incoming sporting director Andrea Berta has identified key targets to bolster Mikel Arteta’s squad, with Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi emerging as prime candidates, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
Guimarães has established himself as a key part of Newcastle’s midfield since his arrival from Lyon.
The Brazilian international remains under contract at St. James’ Park until 2028, with a current market valuation of €80 million. However, reports suggest that should Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League, they may be open to offers in the region of £70 million.
Zubimendi, meanwhile, has been a long-term target for Arsenal and is viewed as a perfect fit for Arteta’s tactical setup.
The Spanish midfielder, under contract with Real Sociedad until 2027, has a release clause of £51 million, making him a slightly more affordable option than Guimarães.
Jacobs revealed that while technical director Edu remains focused on securing Zubimendi, Berta has prioritised Guimarães. There is even speculation that Arsenal could attempt an ambitious double swoop for both midfielders in the upcoming transfer window.
Speaking on GiveMeSport’s Market Madness, Jacobs said:
“So Zubimendi is very much the Edu target, but Berta is going to be looking at Bruno Guimaraes. And my understanding is that Arsenal may try for both Zubimendi and Guimaraes, plus Isak or Sesko.”
Guimarães has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers this season, featuring in 36 matches across all competitions while registering three goals and eight assists. Zubimendi, on the other hand, has played 37 games for Sociedad, contributing a goal and two assists. (Transfermarkt)
Mikel Arteta is under increasing pressure to deliver silverware, with Arsenal still searching for their first league title since 2004. Addressing midfield depth will be crucial in ensuring the team can compete consistently across all fronts next season.
The update from Jacobs will have Arsenal fans go crazy, and if the new sporting director can manage to pull off the signing of Bruno and Isak as well as Zubimendi, Berta will become an instant hit among the supporters.

Lakers power forward Maxi Kleber was reportedly close to being involved in another trade with his new team. A former fan favorite of the Dallas Mavericks, Kleber spent eight seasons in Dallas before being part of one of the biggest trades in NBA history — heading to Los Angeles along with NBA superstar Luka Dončić. Now, after missing most of last season due to injury and playing just five minutes for the Lakers before re-injuring a right foot fracture he suffered in January, Kleber nearly found himself on the move again. The reason? The Lakers recently signed star guard Marcus Smart following his buyout with the Washington Wizards. To make room for the deal, Los Angeles needed to clear additional cap space. Their first move was to release point guard Shake Milton, freeing up about $3 million. But that still wasn’t enough. Initially, the Lakers considered trading away players like Dalton Knecht and another player on an expiring contract to bring back a single, more affordable option. Kleber was rumored to be that expiring contract player potentially involved in the deal. However, after exploring options, the Lakers ultimately chose a simpler route — releasing guard Jordan Goodwin to free up the remaining space and finalize the signing of Smart. Kleber has long been regarded as a valuable role player and depth piece, known for his versatility as a big man with the ability to shoot from the perimeter. According to a report from Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the Packers have brought back Nathaniel Hackett in an advisory role for LaFleur and the offense. What Nathaniel Hackett Brings to the Packers’ Staff Hackett’s return comes on the heels of Robert Saleh joining the staff after his dismissal as New York Jets head coach last season, when he served as a special advisor to defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, and Hackett will likely occupy a similar role for Green Bay in 2025. LaFleur’s former offensive coordinator with the Packers from 2019 through the 2022 season, when he was hired as the Denver Broncos’ head coach before being dismissed after just one season and ultimately landing with Aaron Rodgers as the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator for one-plus seasons from 2023 into the 2024 campaign. Adding a veteran coach with previous ties to LaFleur has to be an asset for the Packers as Green Bay looks to make some big strides on that side of the ball in 2025.
Calder Trophy winner faces another unprecedented season with Canadiens
Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson cemented himself in hockey history with his Calder Trophy-winning rookie season last year. His 60 assists tied Larry Murphy for the most ever recorded by a rookie defender, while his 66 total points ranked fifth in history. Hutson’s company on the leaderboards is full of Hall of Fame talent, including Chris Chelios (50 A, 56 TP as a rookie), Nicklas Lidstrom (49 A, 60 TP) and Ray Bourque (48 A, 65 TP). But despite the warm company, Hutson still faces a task unlike any of his highly-touted peers. He has to show he can follow it up. Many former high-scoring, rookie defenders have earned their keep on both ends of the ice. Hutson breaks that mold. He is the first to ever cross the 60-point — or, even the 50-point — mark while recording a negative plus-minus. The only players to manage similar feats were Phil Housley, Quinn Hughes and Moritz Seider — who each finished their rookie campaigns short of both the 50-point mark and positive plus-minus. That certainly speaks to the high-event ice time Hutson experienced, but it shouldn’t come as a direct attack on his defensive acumen. Instead, it’s a testament to Hutson’s deeply unique style. He’s a hyper-mobile defender, who uses crafty stickhandling and skillful skating to sneak into the tightest spaces between opponents. Many defenders have excelled with those talents, but few are rarely look as gifted as Hutson. That degree of finesse helps Hutson make up for an otherwise scrawny frame — though one not lacking any physical gumption — in a way that seems reminiscent of former greats like Housley. But where Housley went on to net 1,232 career points, the next highest-scoring defenseman under the height of 5-foot-11 was Randy Carlyle, who finished his career with 647 points. That’s an extreme gap, not helped by the fact that Caryle weighed in at over 200 pounds. The NHL is not built to support nimble and skillful offensive-defensemen. It’s too heavy and physical of a league. And yet, Hutson showed no signs of struggling as he stomped his way to Montreal’s top defender role last season. He blazed that path with the same agility, instinct and cool-headedness that’s made him successful as far back as youth hockey. Then again, NHL game planning is better than ever as teams begin to lean on video tracking and analytics to support their pre-game prep. Many of Hutson’s break-ins came on the outskirts of the offensive zone, and his scoring chances from creative passes after working into space on the boards or behind the net. As teams adjust for that, Hutson will face the imposing question of if he can adjust his game too. Putting on more weight and continuing to improve at getting back on defense could go a long way towards building the full, all-three-zones ability that could push Hutson’s game to a truly special level. But if teams catch on to how to stop him before he has time to take the next step, he could quickly struggle to make the same plays he always has. That will be the task that faces Hutson next season — and its result could define Montreal’s blue-line for years to come. Hutson is up for a new contract next summer, and could sign an extension at any point now that July 1 has passed. Of the nine other defensemen to score at least 60 points in their rookie year, seven have gone on to play in over 1,000 NHL games. The other two still managed hundreds of games of their own (Reed Larson, 904; Barry Beck, 615). And yet, it’s hard to think any have deviated from the view of average NHL defender quite like Hutson. He’s among tremendous company, and seems headed for many years of incredible hockey after such a strong start. But it seems that the true, special aspects of Hutson’s career will be defined by how his sophomore season goes. In proving he can continue to perform at All-Star levels, Hutson will not only earn what’s sure to be a lofty contract next summer, but could cement his spot in Montreal’s top role for the next seven or eight seasons. He’s now joined by fellow, flashy company in Noah Dobson — and could get the support from more defensively-focused peers like Kaiden Guhle, Alexandre Carrier and Mike Matheson. The extent to which that supporting cast can boost Hutson to an encore performance will make his 2025-26 campaign much-watch hockey, even after he’s earned the Rookie of the Year title in a special Calder Trophy race.
