Manchester United, regardless of who the manager will be, is looking to reshape the core of his squad, and recruitment in midfield is expected to be one of the top priorities.
The club have already drawn up a shortlist.
But while United have been linked with several names, not every target remains within reach.
One player who had previously been on United’s radar is Joao Gomes, currently impressing at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who look set to be relegated this season.
The Brazilian midfielder has attracted attention across.
However, the situation has now shifted.
According to Napoli Magazine, Napoli are pushing strongly to sign Joao Gomes, having already attempted to secure his services during the January window and continuing to work on a deal ahead of the summer.
Financial factors could play a major role.
With Wolves facing the threat of relegation, Napoli believe they could negotiate a more favourable fee, giving them an advantage in the race.
For Manchester United, this may not be a major setback.
The club’s current focus is understood to be elsewhere, with stronger attention being placed on alternative midfield options such as Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali.
Both players are seen as better fits, offering different profiles but similar levels of intensity and technical quality.
United are expected to pursue at least two midfield signings, particularly with changes expected in the current squad.
Manuel Ugarte looks more than likely to leave in the summer with AS Monaco enquiring about the midfielder and his agent offering him to Napoli.
Casemiro will be leaving at the end of the season which leaves a major gap in the middle of the park and in the dressing room with the experience that comes with the Brazilian.
His stats don’t paint a proper picture of his season, with four goal contributions in 35 games in all competitions this season.
While Gomes remains a highly rated talent, the club appear comfortable allowing Napoli to take the lead in that pursuit.
