Nemanja Vidic names Manchester United’s best defender

Nemanja Vidic is widely seen as one of Manchester United’s greatest defenders.

Joining from Spartak Moscow in 2006, Vidic went on to make 300 appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals from the centre-back position.

Vidic won an array of trophies during his time at United, winning the 2008 UEFA Champions League final, five Premier League titles and three League Cups.

He also formed a brilliant centre-back partnership with Rio Ferdinand, a duo that is seen by many as the best the Premier League has ever seen.

Speaking to CBS Sports Golazo, Vidic was asked about the current United team.

He said that Dutch centre-back Matthijs De Ligt is United’s current best defender.

So, if you look at [it] statistically, you will say that we still concede too many goals, but I agree that some players improved their game and [are] then playing this season much better.

“De Ligt is, I think, the best player at the back for Man United. So, I think consistency is the key. If you want to play for Man United, you have to perform week in, week out.

“You know, you cannot afford to have one good game and two bad games.”

De Ligt joined from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2024 after previous spells with Ajax and Juventus.

After a slow start to life at United, the 26-year old has turned a corner at the club and started to come to his own in Ruben Amorim’s three at the back system.

He grabbed a last minute equaliser as United drew 2-2 away to Tottenham Hotspur in early November.

After missing the Wolverhampton and West Ham United games in the past week, De Ligt will hope to be fit for the AFC Bournemouth game on Monday night as United aim to make it back-to-back wins.
