Gary Neville praises Manchester United for signing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, who suits the system used by manager Ruben Amorim. Neville highlighted that United let go of players like Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho, known for their ball-carrying abilities.
However, the on-loan trio struggled with consistency at the club, leading to their eventual departure and leaving a huge gap. Only Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo are the two players capable of covering distance for United with their dribbling abilities.
However, Garnacho has also struggled with consistency, while fitness remains a lingering issue for youngster Diallo amid his impressive development. The Red Devils’ attacking unit needs recruits under Amorim, players capable of playing under Amorim’s tactical requirements at the club.
Neville provides his assessment (via the Mirror) on Cunha by highlighting what he brings to United under Amorim once they sign the forward from Wolves during the summer transfer window. He said:
“Man United are desperate in that position. You think of what Manchester United are playing now, they’ve let Jadon Sancho go, they’ve let (Marcus) Rashford go, they’ve let Antony go, so three players who are natural players who travel with the ball. They need someone who can beat players, they need someone who’s equally as good running through the middle with the ball and travelling with the ball, and go out wide and support the wing-back. So he’s [Cunha] a type of player that you could see Manchester United being interested in, that would suit this system that Ruben Amorim wants to play.”
Cunha has the versatility to play at several different positions in the attacking department, playing dominantly as a central forward. Meanwhile, United’s forward position issues played a pivotal role in their miserable season in the Premier League.
Both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have failed to establish themselves as regular starters under Amorim. Their inability to influence the overall game, along with poor contribution in front of the goal, has hurt the club.
Cunha has played a pivotal role for Wolves in linkup play and also made a strong contribution throughout the season. The 25-year-old made 35 appearances in all competitions for Wolves this season, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists.
Cunha perfectly fits the profile that Amorim desires in a forward, which is why United are willing to spend £62.5m. However, the Red Devils need more recruits to help both Cunha and Amorim, as there are many holes in their squad.
