Two new LA Galaxy players have been added to the reigning champions’ roster this week.
After dealing away current MLS Cup MVP Gaston Brugman and experienced Defender Martin Cáceres mere days after winning a record sixth title, the LA Galaxy have begun to reinforce the team to defend its crown.
The G’s made two signings in as many days, both backline additions, that are designed to improve their defense. And it can be argued they needed the reinforcements, with more LA Galaxy players leaving this off-season than arriving so far.
The Galaxy sold promising young Defender Jalen Neal to Montreal last week, leaving them with just one signed center-back a few weeks before the season starts.
Cue the arrivals.
On Wednesday, January 15, the Galaxy announced the signing of Center Back Mathias Zanka Jørgensen from Belgian side Anderlecht. The next day, Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski was signed by LA as a free agent after a five-year stay with rival San Jose.
How will these new LA Galaxy players fit into the current roster, and what will they bring to the MLS Cup Champions?

Zanka/Marcinkowski Deal Details?
Financial details for the Zanka deal haven’t been released yet, so it remains to be seen what kind of financial package the Galaxy and his previous team, Anderlecht, negotiated.
What is known, however, is that LA was able to add the player to their ranks and still stay under the league salary cap.
Zanka joins Los Angeles on a two-year contract through the end of the 2026 MLS season. He’ll occupy an international roster slot and will be added to the Galaxy roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P1 Visa.
The experienced defender is currently valued at $800K on Transfermarkt.com.
Marcinkowski’s signing is relatively straightforward. No transfer fee with the Earthquakes was necessary to complete the deal.
The Galaxy announced they’d reached an agreement with the free agent on a two-year contract through the end of the 2026 MLS season, with a club option for 2027. The former San Jose Homegrown player will join the Galaxy immediately.
Who is Mathias Zanka Jørgensen?
Based on his experience, Zanka should become a big contributor to the side almost immediately.
The 34-year-old Danish National Team defender has represented his country at a World Cup, won multiple league titles as a vital member of the side, and played at the highest level in several countries.
The new arrival, who can also play as a right-back, has 37 career appearances (22 starts) for the Denmark Men’s National Team, recording two goals, one of which came in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Croatia. Zanka also has over 500 professional appearances in the top flights of Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany, Netherlands, and Turkey since making his professional debut in the 2007-08 UEFA Cup for boyhood club F.C. Copenhagen.
But the most important part of the equation is Zanka’s pedigree as a winner.
The defender won the Danish Superliga five times with Copenhagen, where he spent the longest tenure in his career. Add in another five Danish Cups, and you have a player who can add to an already vibrant championship culture in LA.
“We are thrilled to welcome Zanka to the LA Galaxy,” LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz said via press release. “Zanka is a five-time Danish League and Danish Cup champion, has experience in the English Premier League, and has represented Denmark in over 30 matches including at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Zanka’s quality and experience will be a great addition to our group as we prepare to participate in multiple competitions in the upcoming season.”
More of a Cáceres replacement than a swap for Neal, Zanka will need to hit the ground running to supplant two aforementioned fan favorites. But if he shows the form that saw him earn international call-ups and win league titles, the Galaxy might’ve gotten a steal in signing Zanka as one of the newest LA Galaxy players.
Who is JT Marcinkowski?
Marcinkowski joins the Galaxy after making 96 appearances (95 starts) across all competitions in five seasons played with the San Jose Earthquakes. An Earthquakes Academy product, the California native signed a homegrown contract with San Jose in 2017.
His best season was 2021, which saw Marcinkowski post a career-high five shutouts and 129 saves in 33 matches played (all starts). He posted similar numbers in 2022, but by 2023, his numbers dropped, and he lost his spot in San Jose’s starting 11. He made only 13 starts but posted a very respectable 1.22 goals against average in limited minutes.
2024 brought more bad news. Marcinkowski tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee during preseason. As a result, the 27-year-old shot-stopper missed the entire 2024 season due to injury.
Which is why this could be an important season for Marcinkowski. If he can perform at the level that earned him a call-up to represent the U.S. Men’s National Team at several age groups, he’ll be a valuable addition to a talented goalkeeper pool.
“We are excited to add JT to our LA Galaxy goalkeeping corps,” Kuntz said of the second of new LA Galaxy players. “JT has a wealth of experience in MLS, much of that coming from competing against the Galaxy in numerous Cali Clásico matchups during his time with the San Jose Earthquakes. He will provide valuable competition and depth at the goalkeeping position as we embark on this upcoming campaign.”
What Do the New LA Galaxy Players Bring to the Champions?
Neither signing was probably the marquee signature Galaxy fans were hoping for in light of departures and the current injury to Riqui Puig, but both new LA Galaxy players raise the overall quality of the roster.
Not only are they meant to improve the depth of the team, but in Marcinkowski’s case, could turn into a valuable asset for cap and roster flexibility in the future.
Marcinkowski will be expected to bring a challenge to the current goalkeeper pool, and should he be called into action, there won’t be a noticeable drop-off in quality at the position. In fact, Marcinkowski outperforms current Galaxy #1 John McCarthy in several key metrics like average pass length and pass completion when launched, according to Fbcharts.com.
More importantly, Marcinkowski is well ahead of McCarthy in crosses stopped, meaning a greater command of his penalty area.
Improvement in this area could mean the difference between a few goals conceded, and a few more points earned for a team that conceded most of its goals last year on corner kicks and set pieces.
Zanka’s progressive ball-playing abilities should work well in Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney’s possession-based system. His ability to bring an attacking element (34 goals, 14 assists across his career) to the backline is an added plus. His experience at the highest level should afford Captain Maya Yoshida some time off or cover in a fixture-congested season.
It remains to be seen how both will perform on the field, but on paper, both new LA Galaxy players should serve to reinforce Los Angeles for their title defense in 2025.

‘Contract terms being discussed’: Liverpool inching closer to another deal before Isak – Fabrizio Romano
Liverpool are continuing to tackle multiple avenues in the summer transfer window, including the potential sale of Darwin Nunez. Despite hopes that Arne Slot could prove to be a transformative presence for the Uruguayan, the striker’s days at Anfield appear to be numbered. Reports had indicated that Italian clubs were seriously interested in the No.9. However, Liverpool’s asking price (reportedly set at €70m [£60.7m]) for Nunez has precluded him from a potential Serie A move. Has Darwin Nunez stance on Saudi Pro League transfer changed? We were initially led to believe that the former Benfica hitman was only really open to a move within the boundaries of Europe. However, judging by Fabrizio Romano’s latest update on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday evening, it would appear that position is not quite fixed. The Italian reports that Al-Hilal ‘have presented [an] official proposal’ to Darwin Nunez. Intriguingly, it would appear as if the negotiations are being entertained by the player and his camp. So, a move certainly isn’t off the table just yet. From a Liverpool perspective, that’s seriously good news given that the likes of Napoli and Co. were not able to fork out the kind of cash we were hoping to receive for the out-of-favour forward. Nunez sale would help Liverpool keep costs down amid Isak pursuit It should be emphasised that Liverpool are in absolutely no danger of breaching PSR this summer – even should we complete a record transfer for Isak. Regardless, it’s nice to see that the club has already made some significant headway in balancing the books with deals for the likes of Luis Diaz (£65.5m) and Jarell Quansah (£35m). A further influx of cash in the region of £60m for Nunez would no doubt be welcome news for a club that continues to be extremely well run behind the scenes. Not to mention beneficial ahead of a potential mammoth fee to be spent on Newcastle’s Alexander Isak. It remains to be seen whether we manage to complete this one before the summer window closes on September 1. But we’re hopeful!
Surprising Marlins earn MLB first in sweep of Yankees
The Miami Marlins achieved a franchise first on Sunday. In doing so, they carved out an interesting place in MLB history. With a 7-3 victory over the Yankees, the Marlins swept New York for the first time in a series of three or more games. In doing so, the Marlins became the only team to have a winning record, including the postseason, against the Yankees. The Yankees now have a 22-21 record against the Marlins in the regular season. However, the Marlins won the 2003 World Series against the Yankees in six games, giving the Fish a 25-24 record all-time. The Marlins' victory on Sunday meant more than a unique place in baseball history. That victory evened the Marlins' record at 55-55, the first time they have been at .500 or better since April 15 (8-8). The Marlins are 30-14 in their last 44 games, tying the 2003 championship team for the best stretch (last done from June 18-Aug. 9) in franchise history. The Marlins defied expectations at the trade deadline, holding on to pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera. Their only trade involved sending outfielder Jesus Sanchez to Houston, acquiring pitcher Ryan Gusto and a pair of prospects. Expectations were that the Marlins were simply waiting for the offseason to trade those pitchers, as there may be a larger market. Instead, the generally inexperienced Marlins roster is growing and improving by the day. They have clawed back from a 24-40 start to the season to pull themselves into the NL wild-card conversation. Although a lot would need to go right for the Marlins to reach the playoffs this season, they could be a dangerous team over the rest of the season and beyond. The Yankees found that out the hard way.
25-time Grammy winner's sports agency blasts Jerry Jones for 'comical' comment
The Dallas Cowboys may have 99 problems, and the way owner Jerry Jones handles contract negotiations could be considered a big one. Jones spoke with the media Saturday regarding Micah Parsons' contract situation. The EDGE, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal, has requested a trade. The 82-year-old owner clarified the Cowboys have no plans to trade Parsons. While discussing negotiations, Jones took an unprovoked jab at former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant and his agent, rapper Jay-Z. "When we have a problem within the team and a player, I don't ever find the agent. He's nowhere to be found," Jones said. "...Jay-Z and I negotiated [Bryant's contract in 2015], spent hours. He said, 'Anybody in my organization is on time.' He said, 'My office used to be on the street corner, and I've always been early. So, they will be on time.' And I said, 'Where do I sign? But I'm going to call you.' Finally, he quit taking my call." The 25-time Grammy winner's sports agency, Roc Nation, took issue with Jones' comment. In a statement released on X Sunday, it denied his claim, calling it "comical." This is yet another example of Jones prioritizing attention when he should be focused on extending two-time first-team All-Pro Parsons. The Cowboys often delay deals for their stars. The team signed Bryant to a five-year, $70M deal in July 2015, just before the deadline to extend players with a franchise tag. Last season, Dallas signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year, $240M contract ahead of its season opener against the Cleveland Browns. The team's procrastination often leaves it paying even more for star players and wastes valuable time. Parsons is still with the team at training camp in Oxnard, Calif., but isn't participating. He likely wants a contract that's similar to that of Pittsburgh Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt (three years, $123M). The pass-rusher is the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league. Jones' methods are one reason the Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl since the 1995 season. Jay-Z should mention that if he wants to write a single that includes a lyric about the owner.
Marlins troll Yankees with fitting song amid series sweep
The Miami Marlins turned to good ol’ Neil Diamond to clown on the New York Yankees during their impressive weekend triumph. Miami pulled off an improbable three-game series sweep of the Yankees on Sunday with a 7-3 win at LoanDepot Park in Miami. It marked the sixth consecutive series victory for the Marlins as well as their first-ever three-game sweep of the Yankees in franchise history. As Sunday’s game was nearing the end, the Marlins decided to have some fun. With the Yankees down to their last three outs entering the top of the ninth inning, “Sweet Caroline” began loudly playing inside the ballpark. Here is a video: Of course, “Sweet Caroline” is an anthem of the Boston Red Sox, the hated rivals of the Yankees. The song plays in the eighth inning of every game at Fenway Park. Fittingly enough, the 62-51 Red Sox are officially now ahead of the Yankees in the AL East standings (thanks to the Yankees’ brutal weekend against the Marlins putting them at 60-52). The Yankees only had themselves to blame for their poor weekend showing, piling on several more embarrassing mental mistakes during the series. As for the Marlins though, they are quickly looking like one of the best stories of the second half. After sitting at a dismal 25-41 in mid-June, Miami is suddenly a .500 team again at 55-55 and it has clawed to within 5.5 games back of a wild-card spot in the NL.
