New York Red Bulls veteran goalkeeper Carlos Coronel will depart the club once his contract expires in December.

According to Tom Bogert of The Athletic, the Red Bulls and Coronel held talks over a new contract but were unable to reach a deal.

Coronel joined the Red Bulls initially on loan from Red Bull Salzburg in Feb. 2021. After impressing in 35 appearances, New York made the move permanent in Dec. 2021.

He made 180 appearances for the Red Bulls across all competitions.

The 2025 Red Bulls failed to make the playoffs for the first time in 15 years after a 43-point season. Coronel played in 31 MLS matches in 2025. He allowed 42 goals against and recorded 10 clean sheets.

One year earlier, Coronel helped New York reach their first MLS Cup since 2008. The Red Bulls lost to the LA Galaxy in the 2024 MLS Cup at Dignity Health Sports Park.

The Red Bulls posted a message on Instagram thanking Coronel for his four years spent in Harrison.

“Thank you for so much Carlos. You were, you are and always will be Red.”

Coronel has made nine international appearances for Paraguay. It’s likely that several MLS clubs will attempt to sign the 28-year-old shot stopper during the offseason.

The Red Bulls will now need to strengthen their goaltending depth. AJ Marcucci underwent knee surgery in August. Veteran John McCarthy was acquired from the Galaxy for a 2026 third-round draft pick following Marucci's injury.

McCarthy was favored over Coronel for New York's final game of the 2025 MLS season away to Columbus.

The Red Bulls are still looking to replace former head coach Sandro Schwarz, who was let go by the club three weeks ago.
