Newcastle and Manchester United in tug-of-war over star striker

Newcastle United and Manchester United are locked in a transfer battle for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, as both clubs look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season.

With uncertainty surrounding the future of Newcastle star Alexander Isak, who is attracting serious interest from Liverpool, the Magpies are moving swiftly to identify a potential replacement.

Their top target appears to be 22-year-old Sesko, with a £70 million bid already submitted, equivalent to approximately $93 million. That figure is believed to meet Leipzig’s valuation.

Sesko, who has been tracked by a host of Europe’s top clubs in recent years, is expected to make a move this summer. Leipzig’s managing director of sport, Marcel Schafer, confirmed over the weekend that “several clubs” have made firm approaches, via Sky Sports

The Slovenian forward was notably absent from Leipzig’s squad for their pre-season friendly against Atalanta on Saturday and is believed to have informed teammates of his intention to leave.

“We won’t go into detail on that,” Schafer said, “but when I say several clubs have shown strong interest and made approaches, it’s obvious what has happened.”

Newcastle, however, face stiff competition from Manchester United. The Red Devils have shown interest in Sesko but have yet to submit a formal bid.

There is also speculation that Leipzig could be keen on a deal involving United forward Rasmus Hojlund, potentially paving the way for a player-plus-cash arrangement.

It would not be the first time Newcastle have missed out on a top target to a Premier League rival. Recent pursuits of James Trafford and Hugo Ekitike ended in disappointment, with the duo opting for Manchester City and Liverpool, respectively.

While the structure of a deal between Newcastle and Leipzig is still being discussed, Sesko is reportedly open to a move to either St. James’ Park or Old Trafford.

Barring a late twist, the promising striker seems poised for a move to England, and a place in the Premier League spotlight.
