Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles admits manager Eddie Howe was furious during their 2-2 draw with West Ham last week.
Newcastle were trailing 1-0 at the break.
Lascelles told Chronicle Live: "A lot of people probably think he is really nice. But he is feared. I think he can do both, be nice and have the chats and put his arm around you.
"But if he needs to tell somebody you are going to know about no matter who you are. I think the way he manages everything is perfect.
"He has 100% respect of the players.
"I think at half-time we probably would have taken a point. The first half wasn't great, I didn't start off great. It shows great character from the team (to go 2-1 up). The gaffer gave us a kick up the backside at half-time and it was what we needed.
"We came out flying after the break. We had control, we had chances and possession. There's fine margins in football can cost you and it did for us on Sunday."
