Newcastle midfielder makes transfer decision ahead of contract expiry
PA Images/Alamy Images

Newcastle United are relaxed about the future of Sean Longstaff.

After joining their youth academy over 20 years ago, the 26-year-old midfielder has been with the Magpies his entire career.

One of the club’s own, Longstaff is a fan-favourite and a well-respected member of Eddie Howe’s squad.

Despite his loyalty though, there have been questions over the playmaker’s future with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, and so far, no agreement to renew in place.

However, according to Football Insider, Longstaff, despite being eligible to negotiate a pre-contract with clubs outside of England from January, has no plans to leave St. James’ Park.

The Geordie-born academy graduate hopes to extend his contract with Howe equally as keen to keep him on.

Even though the former Bournemouth manager has the likes of Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes among his options, Longstaff, who has started in 34 Premier League games since the start of last season, has remained a regular.

The midfielder’s importance is not up for debate, the only thing left for the northeast giants to do is to tie their number 36 down on fresh terms.

Since being promoted to Newcastle’s first team in 2019, Longstaff, who, according to Spotrac, earns £50,000-per week, has directly contributed to 26 goals in 187 games in all competitions.

LeBron James' admission about his role with the Lakers shows it's the beginning of the end

LeBron James has yet to play a single minute this season, and the Los Angeles Lakers are 10-4 and in fourth place in the stacked Western Conference. Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic are combining to average roughly 62 points and 17 assists per game, and the offense is finding its groove. That's why there are some legitimate concerns about how James' return might affect this team's chemistry. When asked about that, James claimed that he would adapt to anything the team needs from him. LeBron James just wants to hoop “Don’t matter. I’ve never had a position. There’s not one team, one club, in the world that I can’t fit in and play for. I can do everything on the floor,” James told the media, per Jovan Buha. This might sound like something positive, but it's also an indication of what's to come. James knows he's no longer the alpha dog on the roster, and he will have to adapt and adjust to the younger players to contribute to their championship aspirations. He's entering his 23rd season and has already missed time due to an injury that's rare among professional athletes, as sciatica injuries are relatively uncommon among young people. The writing is already on the wall, and all signs point to this being the end of the road for the four-time NBA champion. He's not likely to play back-to-backs, and he might have to settle for an off-the-ball role for the first time in his career. It was an incredible ride, and he's certainly earned the right to walk into the sunset on his own terms. At least his team seems to be in good hands.

Taylor Swift's Emotional Letter to Late Liam Payne Set to Fetch $13,000 at Auction

Taylor Swift's emotional handwritten letter to Liam Payne is expected to draw significant attention when it goes up for auction next month. The note, sent in December 2017, is projected to sell for as much as $13,000 due to its deeply personal and historic nature. Swift wrote the message shortly before Payne took the stage at the Jingle Bell Ball in London, at a time when he was gaining traction as a solo artist after One Direction began its hiatus. According to the auctioneers, interest has already grown ahead of bidding. Taylor wrote: "Liam, long time no see! I'm so excited for you. You're crushing it out there. I'm obsessed with Bedroom Floor. It's so cool to see you from afar, I'm always cheering you on. Good luck tonight!" The Mirror reports that the letter showed up in an envelope labeled only "Liam," covered in stars. The envelope was wax-sealed with a "T," and on the back appeared "Nashville, Tennessee." Payne reportedly gave the letter to a friend shortly after receiving it. The sale of the note comes just over a year after Payne's death in October 2024. The singer died at age 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. According to the People, an autopsy later revealed polytrauma along with traces of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants in his system. His sister, Ruth Gibbins, described ongoing grief in the months since his death. She said: "My brain is locked on your last minutes on this earth, the unaccounted minutes, the minutes I will never have the answers to, the minutes that changed everything." She also posted on Instagram : "I underestimated grief, woah, did I underestimate it. I am paralysed by it daily. I thought I had felt it before but I know the losses before you were just intense sadness, you are the loss of my life, the one person who l will miss at every single occasion in my life." Omega Auctions is expected to see much interest from collectors once it begins accepting bids for the item, since the letter is a rare personal exchange between two major pop figures. According to the source, the timing has added an emotional weight to the sale, aligning as it does with the anniversary of Payne's death.

Lakers Broadcasters Under Fire For Claiming Luka Doncic Is Faking An Injury And Only Busy Complaining To Officials

The Lakers faced the Jazz in what was LeBron James’ season debut for the franchise. While all eyes in the arena were fixed on LeBron, a significant number of their fans were also watching on their TV and league pass broadcasts at home. And they seemed to have seen something at the game that did not sit well with them. During the second quarter, Austin Reaves threw a lob for Luka Doncic, which he failed to convert as a Jazz player fell on him, and he lost his balance and collapsed on the floor with him. After the play ended, Doncic was seen limping back to the other side of the court while complaining to the officials about the lack of a foul called on the play. Lakers’ broadcasters Bill Macdonald and Stu Lantz were also covering the game live at the time. “Luka’s limping a little bit at the other end, and he might be holding his knee a little bit,” said Bill Macdonald, the Lakers’ play-by-play announcer during the broadcast. “Did he hit his knees? Did they hit legs?” “I think he’s more upset that he didn’t get the call,” said Lantz after MacDonald’s observation. “I do too,” agreed Macdonald. “As he comes down, a little bit of contact with the defender, but that can be serious,” acknowledged Lantz. “He landed awkwardly, he landed awkwardly without question,” Macdonald further added. “What a good play by George, he read that play all the way,” said Lantz in praise of Jazz’s Keyonte George for his defense on Luka. “Luka is still holding his left knee, but I think you’re right, Stu; he’s more complaining to the officials than wanting to take himself out of the game,” said MacDonald as play resumed. This exchange between the Lakers’ broadcasters did not sit well with fans at home, who felt that the Lakers’ broadcasters were being biased against their own team and thus not doing their work properly. “Stu Lantz is negative about Luka Doncic the whole game, every single game. Hasn’t said a single negative thing about ANY Lakers player other than him tonight. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence. Clown show.” “Bro Stu Lantz is such an opp.” “No announcers get more excited when the other team scores than Bill Macdonald and Stu Lantz! Just dreadful.” “Does Stu Lantz hate the Lakers or what? I swear, every game it seems like he’s rooting for every call to be against them.” “Will Stu Lantz and Bill ever be in favor of the Lakers on a foul call? Hear every other team’s commentators be bias af to their teams every day is kinda annoying.” Several such reactions flooded the internet as the Lakers’ broadcasters came under fire from fans. Doncic resumed playing normally and finished the half with 20 points, six assists, and three steals. Clearly, it wasn’t a serious injury. With a few minutes left in the final quarter, Doncic already has 37 points, four rebounds, nine assists, and four steals in the game. He does not deserve to be criticized like this when he is carrying the team’s offensive load on a nightly basis, as he now leads the league in scoring as well. Considering what the opposing defenses resort to to stop him from scoring, in my opinion, he is allowed some room to complain to the officials about the physicality on the floor. And no team should be subject to seeing their own superstar criticized by their own broadcasters, who are supposed to hype up their plays even more.
