Newcastle have all but completed the signing of Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to talkSPORT.

The Magpies have been linked with virtually every player on the planet since the Saudi consortium completed their multi-hundred million-pound takeover of the club.

Guimaraes, who has built up quite the reputation in Ligue 1, subsequently attracting interest from some of Europe’s big boys, was one of their more ambitious targets.

Remarkably, they have managed to get a deal over the line to sign the Brazilian, or so claims a report by talkSPORT today.

As per their information, a £30m agreement has been reached with Lyon over the transfer of Guimaraes’ services, who will presumably now undergo a medical. Arsenal were believed to be in the running, but have missed out.

It’s claimed that Newcastle are still in the market for a central defender and are unlikely to conclude their January business after striking a deal to sign Guimaraes.

Even if they were to sign nobody else, though, it’s a serious statement of intent. Not just in terms of remaining in the Premier League, but challenging for it in the years to come.

The so-called ‘big six’ in the Premier League will be looking over their shoulders – make no mistake about it.
