Newcastle United and Liverpool start their 2026–27 Premier League campaigns against each other at St James’ Park today, Sunday, with both clubs starting a new era under new managers.

Matthias Jaissle takes charge of Newcastle after Eddie Howe’s departure, and Andoni Iraola makes his competitive debut as Liverpool boss.

All eyes are on Alexander Isak as he heads back to St James’ Park to face Newcastle for the first time since his £125 million move to Liverpool. Both teams look very different after a busy transfer window, and early injuries make picking the starting lineup tough before the 4:30 p.m. BST kickoff (11:30 a.m. ET in the USA).

Newcastle United Lineup

  • Goalkeeper: Lukas Horníček
  • Dedić, Botman, Thiaw, Hall
  • Ramsey, Bamba
  • Elanga, Wissa, Hrvey Barnes
  • Osula

Matthias Jaissle faces a tough squad selection for his first competitive match. Joelinton has a groin injury, Tino Livramento has a calf injury, and Joe Willock is a doubt to play. New signing Amar Dedić is expected to start at right-back, while Lukas Horníček is tipped to begin in goal.

Newcastle United Team News

Newcastle United went through a massive summer overhaul, losing star players Bruno Guimarães (to Arsenal), Sandro Tonali (to Tottenham), and Anthony Gordon (to Barcelona), alongside manager Eddie Howe. Matthias Jaissle took over as head coach, steering a youth-focused rebuild with several new signings.

So, Jaissle begins his reign with a considerably different team from the one Howe had built. Joelinton and Livramento are unavailable, and Willock faces a late fitness test. Dedić, who joined from Benfica, is expected to make his competitive debut. The new manager is also having to rely on the young additions to continue rebuilding the squad.

Liverpool Lineup

  • Goalkeeper: Alisson
  • Frimpong, Araújo, van Dijk, Kerkez
  • Gravenberch, Szoboszlai
  • Ngumoha, Wirtz, Gakpo
  • Isak

Liverpool also enter the match with a new manager and a significantly altered squad. Ronald Araújo is tipped to make his competitive debut, competing with Jérémy Jacquet to partner captain Virgil van Dijk. Up front, Isak should start against his former club.

Liverpool Team News

Liverpool will be without Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez, and Endo has also been listed as a doubt by some reports. Alexis Mac Allister is unlikely to start after limited preseason minutes following his extended post-World Cup break.

The biggest selection decision is in central defence, where Araújo appears to have the advantage over Jacquet because of his greater match fitness and previous experience playing at St James’ Park.
