Manchester United are laying the groundwork for a huge summer transfer window.

There is a focus on strengthening the midfield, with multiple targets identified.

Newcastle United have made it clear they will not be bullied into selling their top players, issuing a warning to clubs circling Sandro Tonali.

The Italian midfielder has emerged as a key name on United’s shortlist, but any deal is expected to cost well over £100 million.

Club CEO David Hopkinson has opened stated that Newcastle will sell if offers are simply too big to turn down, pointing to last year’s £128 million valuation of Alexander Isak as the benchmark.

“If an Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms and we’re going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club. That absolutely does (mean extracting the maximum price),” Hopkinson said.

Hopkinson admitted that they will need to be open to the idea of selling players because of their financial position at this current moment, which will only further allow United to be optimistic about a transfer, as The Telegraph reported.

Despite being under contract until 2030, there is a growing noise that the player would be open to a lucrative move.

United are already pushing to get a deal for Elliot Anderson wrapped up before the World Cup begins.

The same approach could apply for Sandro Tonali, especially if Italy qualify for the tournament, as his value could skyrocket on the global stage.

Sandro Tonali is not the only name under consideration, with United also tracking Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Each midfield targets offers something different, but they all fit the Ineos bill with regard to being Premier League proven and all are of quality.

For now, United are standing firm in their planning, moving early and avoid being priced out of a deal.

But with Newcastle United refusing to budge and demanding record-breaking fees, this is shaping up to be one of the toughest deals of the summer.
