Brazil and Neymar Jr. continue to navigate the final stretch before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with coach Carlo Ancelotti evaluating players ahead of naming the final squad.
For now, the nation will face France and Croatia later this month in its last friendlies without a confirmed roster for the summer tournament.
The five-time world champions are set to submit their final 26-man roster in late May, and Ancelotti’s most recent squad featured star forwards such as Vinicius Jr., Raphinha and Endrick, but not the nation's top goalscorer.
Neymar, now playing for Santos, has returned to club action following injuries that limited his availability during the past few months, appearing in four games this calendar year, scoring two goals and assisting on two more.
The veteran, however, was not included in Ancelotti’s latest squad for the upcoming matches, leaving him outside the group to play this month's friendlies and with limited time remaining to convince Ancelotti before his final call.
“I wish to go back to the national team and play in the World Cup, but that’s not up to me,” Neymar said. “Whether I am there or not, I will always cheer for Brazil.”
Ancelotti, meanwhile, addressed his selection process during the squad announcement on Monday, pointing to fitness and availability as key factors for Neymar's absence.
“The explanation for the list is that it depends a lot on injuries, obviously,” Ancelotti said. “It’s a list created with players who are 100% physically fit, everyone who is playing.”

On Wednesday, Neymar shared a personal video on his YouTube channel, discussing both his current situation and long-term outlook with the national team.
Neymar described the uncertainty surrounding the call-up compared to those from previous tournaments.
“I'll admit that this call-up—it's a different one for me, because ever since I was first called up, I always knew I would be in on the previous ones,” Neymar said. “And that's a mystery. At this one, I still don’t know if I’ll be in it or not.”
While discussing that uncertainty, Neymar announced that the 2026 World Cup will be his last one—assuming he makes the squad.
“Obviously, it’s my last World Cup,” Neymar said. “I don’t know if it’s my last year in the national team, but it’s coming to an end, and we have to know that.”
Brazil is scheduled to open its World Cup campaign on June 13 against Morocco in Group C, with the final squad set to be confirmed before the end of May.
