Manchester United have produced some of the most memorable moments in Premier League history, with Wayne Rooney responsible for several that remain firmly etched in supporters’ memories.
The former England captain spent 13 years at Old Trafford, scoring 253 goals to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.
His legacy extends beyond the goals themselves, with his passion and unforgettable celebrations helping make him one of United’s most recognisable figures.
Few moments captured his character quite like his response to a viral video involving former teammate Phil Bardsley in March 2015.
Wayne Rooney turned the incident into a celebration that quickly became one of the Premier League’s most talked-about moments.
More than a decade later, football’s influence continues to reach far beyond the pitch, with famous celebrations regularly appearing in other sports.
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Parker Washington appeared to channel Rooney with a boxing-inspired celebration during his team’s 19-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
Washington found the end zone in the first quarter and produced the celebration that brought back memories of Rooney’s famous moment against Tottenham.
The Jaguars receiver also performed Chelsea forward Cole Palmer’s trademark cold celebration, adding another familiar football reference to the NFL’s London showcase.
Rooney’s original celebration came on 15 March 2015, after he scored United’s third goal in a 3-0 victory over Spurs at Old Trafford.
Earlier that day, footage had emerged of Rooney playfully boxing with Bardsley in his kitchen, with the former United striker appearing to be knocked to the floor by a punch.
Rooney responded by throwing punches into the air before dramatically falling backwards onto the turf after scoring.
It was far from Rooney’s only iconic moment.
His spectacular overhead kick against Manchester City in February 2011 remains one of the defining goals of his United career.
There was another United connection in London, too.
Jaguars kicker Cam Little, who grew up playing football and watching the Premier League, wore a Manchester United shirt during his post-match press conference.
Little had just secured a dramatic win with a 57-yard field goal as time expired, completing a remarkable finish after Ameer Abdullah returned the Eagles’ kickoff 53 yards to set up the winning attempt.
Little also sprinted towards the end zone and celebrated with his arms stretched wide in a pose reminiscent of Jude Bellingham.
