Nigel Winterburn reveals why Arteta picks Havertz over Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres has endured a difficult season at Arsenal, despite continuing to score for Sweden. His performances during the latest international break showed why the Gunners spent heavily on him, but he has struggled to reproduce that form since returning to the Emirates.

The striker has found it difficult to secure his manager’s trust, and his opportunities in the starting line-up have not always produced performances to keep his place. That has raised questions about how well he fits Mikel Arteta’s system.

Havertz remains Arteta’s preferred option

Kai Havertz had shown he could suit Arteta’s approach before Arsenal signed Gyokeres. There were questions about whether the former Sporting Club striker would adapt, and his current difficulties have renewed those concerns.

Gyokeres has yet to establish himself as a regular first choice, while Havertz offers qualities that fit the manager’s plans. His movement and ability to link play help explain why Arteta has selected him, leaving Gyokeres needing to make the most of his chances.

Although his form for Sweden demonstrates what he can offer, reproducing that impact in Arsenal colours remains the challenge. The club will have to assess his progress before deciding his longer-term role.
