No De Zerbi: David Ornstein reveals Chelsea’s two final candidates for manager role

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has not been putting too much out on Chelsea’s new manager search, but he has jumped in on it last night to reveal the two final candidates for the position.

Although, the wording does also leave it a little bit open for something to change again and yet another twist to happen in this saga.

It looks like Chelsea are now pressing ahead with the hiring of a new manager, with interviews happening and shortlists being whittled down.

We have been hearing a lot about Roberto De Zerbi in the last couple of days, but in Ornstein’s report there is no mention of him at all, which is really strange with all the reporting going on about him to Chelsea in the last 48 hours.

Ornstein does rule one candidate out though, and that is Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna. He says Chelsea are no longer considering him.

He reports that Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca and Brentford’s Thomas Frank as the only known options remaining to take over.

What does that even mean?

Well, saying the only ‘known’ candidates left would suggest that Chelsea may or may not have other candidates still for the role that we do not know about, candidates that have perhaps not been reported or if they have, are not known to him and his sources.

So it does leave the door open to more twists and turns in this managerial search, but it would also suggest that perhaps with all the noise recently on Maresca, that it may well now end up being him becoming the next Chelsea boss.

I’d not be shocked at all though if there is not another twist in this tale and a manager comes from nowhere, maybe Eden Hazard’s choice of new manager Cesc Fabregas comes to fruition!?
