Nottingham Forest in complete control of Elliot Anderson transfer

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild under Ruben Amorim continues to dominate recruitment plans as the club targets proven Premier League players. One of the standout names to explode onto the scene this season is Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson, who is becoming England’s next elite midfielder.

The 23 year old has forced his way into Thomas Tuchel’s England plans, earning rave reviews for his energy, intelligence and end product. Tuchel has already described him as a “complete” midfielder, and his performances for Forest have reflected that impressive assessment.

Unsurprisingly, that rise has put Anderson firmly on the radar of Manchester United, while former club Newcastle United also retain a strong interest. Forest only paid around £15 million to sign him from Newcastle in July 2024, taking advantage of their rivals’ profit and sustainability pressures. Now, after a breakout campaign in the Premier League and on the international stage, his valuation is expected to soar well beyond that figure.

According to The Telegraph, Forest are preparing to stand firm over their key midfielder, refusing to entertain any sale in the January window. Crucially for Manchester United, there are no hidden escape routes in his deal that could loosen Forest’s grip midway through the season.

Anderson’s contract runs until 2029 and it’s understood that it contains no buy-back clause for Newcastle. There is also no sell-on agreement in place, meaning the Magpies would not profit at all from any future transfer.

On top of that, The Telegraph report that there is no release clause for Manchester United to exploit, giving Forest complete control of any negotiations. Former club Newcastle, who were forced to sell him under financial pressure, are now reduced to watching from the side-lines as his value explodes.

Forest’s owner Evangelos Marinakis will therefore be free to set a market-shaping asking price, with suggestions a total package could exceed £100 million. This places Anderson firmly in the same bracket as fellow Manchester United targets, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton, who have both been suggested to have similar price tags. As such, any move from Old Trafford would demand serious backing from INEOS and belief that he is the long-term cornerstone of Amorim’s midfield.

For Manchester United, the lack of clauses or discounts means there will be no way of by-passing Forest to landing Elliot Anderson ahead of their rivals. Instead, the Red Devils face a straight-up fight with Champions League suitors, negotiating with a selling club who hold every major card.

Ultimately, if Amorim decides that Anderson is the midfielder to strengthen United’s project, they must be prepared for an expensive saga controlled in Nottingham.
