Martin Odegaard believes Arsenal could have won against Bayern Munich in their Champions League clash last night, despite needing a late equaliser from Declan Rice to avoid defeat. The Gunners showed resilience to recover from a difficult position and leave Germany with a point, although their captain felt they could have taken all three.
Arsenal started the contest strongly and took the lead, giving themselves a promising platform against one of Europe’s most challenging opponents. However, Bayern responded well and turned the game around, moving 2-1 ahead by the 61st minute. At that stage, the German side looked well placed to secure a home victory.
Bayern had drawn 3-3 against Viking in Norway in their previous match, but their performance on home soil presented a different challenge for Mikel Arteta’s side. The hosts showed their quality and came close to taking all three points before Arsenal fought back late in the contest.
The Gunners did not create many opportunities to regain the lead after falling behind, but they continued searching for a way back into the match. Their persistence eventually paid off when Rice escaped his marker and produced a fine finish to score Arsenal’s second goal.
The late equaliser ensured Arsenal would return to London with a valuable point rather than suffer defeat. However, Odegaard believes his side had performed well enough to challenge for more, despite the difficulty of facing Bayern and their approach across the pitch.
Speaking to Arsenal Media, the midfielder explained that he was satisfied with much of his team’s display but disappointed they could not turn their performance into a win.
“Yeah, probably a fair result to be honest, but I feel like we could have won the game as well.
“I think we did a lot of good things, started the game really strongly and I thought we played a good game. It was a really tough team to play against, lots of man-to-man, duels all over the pitch and so much quality. I thought we did really well and it’s just a shame we couldn’t get the win, but it was a strong performance.”
Odegaard’s comments highlight Arsenal’s belief that they could have achieved more from the encounter. Their strong start and late response demonstrated their ability to compete, even when Bayern threatened to turn their advantage into a decisive result.
Although the draw may leave the Gunners wondering what might have been, avoiding defeat after falling behind remains a positive outcome. Rice’s late contribution proved crucial, ensuring Arsenal’s efforts were rewarded with a point.
For Odegaard and his teammates, the challenge now is to build on that performance and convert similar displays into victories.
