Tottenham Hotspur have officially sacked Ange Postecoglou after two seasons in North London.
The decision is a bold one after the 59-year-old ended a 17-year trophy drought at the club by guiding the Lilywhites to the UEFA Europa League success. His team beat Manchester United 1-0 in the final in Bilbao to lift the Europa League trophy and secure Champions League qualification for next season in the process.
The Europa League glory in Spain followed a disastrous campaign in the Premier League, during which Spurs finished 17th, losing 22 of their 38 games. However, it seems though European success was not enough for Daniel Levy, who hasn’t shied away from pulling the trigger on Ange Postecoglou.
It is understandable given Tottenham finished just a spot above the three relegated teams to record their worst ever Premier League campaign. The Australian tactician made it clear in recent days that he was keen to stay at the club and continue his project, but Levy and Co have other areas.
In a statement released from the club’s official website, Spurs said the decision was made after “significant reflection” and Postecoglou “will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy”.
“Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,” said Tottenham.
“We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.
“However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances – injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign.
“Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.”
For many years, many managers more decorated and accomplished than Ange walked into Tottenham and yet have all come up short. So, on the trophy aspect in isolation, the Greek-Aussie tactician deserves massive praise. He not lived up to his word of delivering trophies in his second season at clubs but also gave massive joy to our fans. The veteran gaffer gave our loyal supporters a night in Bilbao they will cherish for years and years.
Now, focus will all turn in finding Ange’s replacement. Brentford manager Thomas Frank appears to be Levy’s top target. The Dane’s experience in the Premier League, combined with his ability to develop players and nurture young talents, could be the reason behind his appeal to the Spurs chairman.
However, it would not be easy for the North Londoners to lure Frank away from their London rivals. They will have to stump up in excess of £10m to bring the 51-year-old to N17.
