Manchester United’s latest reset has once again placed short-term stability above long-term certainty as the club looks to steady itself after another managerial change.
With the Premier League season finely poised and European qualification still within reach, decisions made now could shape the months ahead.
Old Trafford remains a hive of internal discussions, with familiar names returning to the conversation as the hierarchy weigh experience against disruption.
Supporters are watching closely, aware that interim appointments often carry consequences far beyond their temporary remit.
Manchester United have appointed Darren Fletcher as interim manager following the decision to part ways with Ruben Amorim on Monday.
The former midfielder has been tasked with guiding the team in the immediate term while the club continues to assess options for an interim head coach until the end of the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick remain the two leading contenders under consideration, with both seen as figures who understand the demands and culture of the club.
On Wednesday, Norwegian outlet VG reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently negotiating the terms of a potential deal with Manchester United.
VG also claimed that the former United manager could sign a contract on Friday, although it remains unclear whether the agreement would be structured as a medium-term or longer-term arrangement.
Further insight has now emerged from Norway regarding the financial side of any potential return to Old Trafford.
According to Netavisen, details of Solskjaer’s possible salary have been discussed, with the 52-year-old understood to be open to earning less than during his previous spell at the club.
Solskjaer managed Manchester United between 2018 and 2021, initially arriving as interim boss in December 2018 on a reported salary of £7.2 million per year.
Netavisen state that his pay remained at the same level once his role was made permanent, reflecting the club’s faith in his early impact.
However, sources cited by the Norwegian newspaper suggest Solskjaer is now willing to accept a reduced package if he is appointed on a temporary basis.
Should he take over as interim manager until the end of the season, his salary is expected to fall in the region of £50,000 to £60,000 per week.
In addition to his base pay, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would reportedly be entitled to a significant performance-related bonus worth between £3 million and £4 million if Manchester United secure qualification for the Champions League.
The Red Devils currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, who also have a game in hand.
It is considered unlikely that any immediate developments will be finalised today, with Solskjaer attending the funeral of Norwegian managerial legend Age Hareide.
