One Man City player just doesn’t do enough when given the opportunity
News Images

It isn’t a stretch to say every Manchester City attacking player put in a disappointing performance against Southampton on Saturday. Pep Guardiola’s side was held to a frustrating nil-all draw by the Saints. They failed to leave the St. Mary’s Stadium with the three points they needed in the bid to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Looking at Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup for the match, James McAtee was given the opportunity to start. But he didn’t make an impact before being substituted at halftime. That’s becoming a theme for McAtee of late.

James McAtee couldn’t get into Saturday’s match at all.

Playing on the right wing and drifting centrally on Saturday, James McAtee couldn’t quite get into Saturday’s match. He was too often crowded out of the game. Southampton’s defensive set-up did contribute to this. There was no space for James McAtee to work in throughout the first half of Saturday’s match. McAtee did put in the odd dangerous cross, but really, the sum of his work wasn’t much against Southampton. He wasn’t alone on that front.

Pep Guardiola’s tactics for the first half of Saturday’s match didn’t help James McAtee. There was no width or urgency to City’s play while McAtee was on the pitch. That was costly as it allowed Southampton to grow into Saturday’s match. So James McAtee isn’t at fault for that.

James McAtee generally plays well when Manchester City are up and about.

Watching James McAtee play of late, it does appear that he’s a player who is at his best when Manchester City are up and about. He doesn’t seem to be the type of player who can lift his team. We have seen him score a hat-trick against Salford City in City’s 8-nil FA Cup third-round tie win over Salford City. He was also crucial in City’s 5-2 win over Crystal Palace in April. But those two performances came with Pep Guardiola’s side playing well. Perhaps that is who James McAtee is as a player.

James McAtee failed to impress against Southampton on Saturday. At times, that happens too often when McAtee starts. It’s an interesting topic to ponder, but perhaps James McAtee is a player who is at his best when Manchester City are up and about. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just may be who he is at this stage of his career.

‘No Chance’: Eddie Howe Makes Shocking Statement About Alexander Isak’s Future Amid Liverpool Links

Newcastle United’s summer has been a difficult one, with Anthony Elanga being the only real first-team signing. They have held some interest in many other targets, but have failed to get close to a deal for any of them. Meanwhile, Alexander Isak has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool. After their pre-season match against Arsenal, Eddie Howe made a statement regarding the matter. Eddie Howe Makes Shocking Statement Regarding Alexander Isak With Liverpool Interested ‘No Chance’ Following Newcastle United’s 3-2 loss to Arsenal in a pre-season fixture, their manager was subject to a press conference as usual. The Geordies had actually taken the lead after six minutes, though trailed 2-1 at half-time. Howe revealed that there is “no chance” of Isak joining the rest of the squad in Asia for the rest of their tour over the next week. He said that there has been no change in the situation since yesterday. Isak had requested a move away from the club on July 24, with Liverpool the only team in concrete talks according to Fabrizio Romano, despite Saudi interest. Howe had admitted in his pre-match presser that there were “things going on behind the scenes” and that there are currently “no contract talks taking place”. Will Newcastle’s Transfer Window Actually Hurt Them This Season? There has been heavy criticism over Newcastle’s transfer window: despite signing Elanga, they had hoped to bring in their top target, Hugo Ekitike, as well as keeping Isak. However, Liverpool have not only hijacked the race for Ekitike, but they now look like they could potentially steal starman Isak as well. However, whilst this is not ideal, it only leaves the Magpies short in one area: the striker department. They now have plenty of winger options with Elanga joining Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon, and even Jacob Murphy. Meanwhile, their defence and midfield were strong last season and have not changed. Despite Callum Wilson also departing, they have the promising William Osula as a back-up option. If they can find a new number nine, they will be fine, and this shouldn’t be difficult with Isak set to bring in an incredibly high fee. Viktor Gyokeres and Ekitike are now no longer on the market, but the likes of Benjamin Sesko haven’t been picked up yet.

Rangers Sign Former Stanley Cup Champion to Tryout Agreement

The New York Rangers are adding to their forward depth ahead of their upcoming training camp. The Rangers are entering a new chapter of their organization under new head coach Mike Sullivan. After missing the postseason last year, the organization is trying to rebound and respond accordingly in 2025 and 2026. Former Stanley Cup champion forward Conor Sheary is the latest player to join the new-look Rangers. The veteran forward agreed to a professional tryout agreement (PTO) with the club and will look to earn an NHL deal with his performance in training camp and the preseason. Sheary is a veteran of 593 NHL games. Originally an undrafted free agent, he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins after completing his collegiate career. Following a year with the Penguins' AHL affiliate, he forced his way onto the NHL squad after posting 36 points in his first 30 games of the 2015-2016 season at the AHL level. His debut NHL season went better than ever expected, and he was a key part of the Penguins' lineup that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. Sheary's coach at the time, both at the AHL and NHL levels, was Mike Sullivan. Now, he'll get the chance to reunite with the coach under whom he won two championships. In addition to playing for the Penguins, Sheary has played for three other NHL franchises. The Pens dealt him to the Buffalo Sabres before the 2018-2019 campaign, but he would return to Pittsburgh the following season at the trade deadline. After his second stint with the Penguins, he joined the Washington Capitals. He played three seasons in Washington, D.C. before landing with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he spent the past two years. Over his 593 career games, he's compiled 124 goals and 143 assists for 267 points. His best NHL season came during the 2016-2017 campaign, his second in the league. He scored 23 goals and added 30 assists for 53 points in 61 regular-season games.

New report suggests Christian Wilkins release related to 'incident' with teammate

There may be more to Christian Wilkins’ recent surprise release from the Las Vegas Raiders. NFL reporter Josina Anderson reported Saturday that "some sources believe an incident involving a teammate may have factored in-part into the Raiders' fatigue and release" of Wilkins. The nature of the incident is not clear. However, many believe the Raiders had a very good reason to move on from Wilkins considering the money they had invested in him. It also suggests the Raiders saw no alternative if they went straight to a release. Wilkins was dumped by the Raiders just one year into a four-year, $110 million deal. The Raiders suggested Wilkins failed to take rehab seriously as he tries to work his way back from a foot injury. Other teams do not appear to have the same concerns about Wilkins as the Raiders did, and he should find a new landing spot fairly easily. That is one of the reasons some suspect there is more to the Raiders’ decision than they are publicly saying.

Celtics Rumors: Damian Lillard, Neemias Queta, Ben Simmons

Damian Lillard was briefly linked to the Celtics after being waived and stretched by the Bucks, but that possibility came and went quicker than a Jrue Holiday text. Turns out Holiday did shoot his shot. “As soon as I was waived … he sent me the eyeball emoji,” Lillard said at his introductory presser in Portland. “I already knew where I was pivoting to when he sent it, but I didn’t want to say nothing too soon, so here we are.” “Here” is back in a Trail Blazers uniform. And while Lillard isn’t expected to play this season as he recovers from a torn Achilles, the idea of him as a long-term Jayson Tatum insurance policy briefly crossed Boston’s radar. That was about as far as it got. As MassLive’s Brian Robb wrote, the Celtics never had the financial path to compete with Portland’s three-year, $42 million offer. Boston only has the $5.7M taxpayer MLE to work with — and using that might’ve meant shedding some other salary just to stay under the second apron. Who’s starting at center? In a new mailbag, Robb projects Neemias Queta as the likely starting center if the roster stays put. That would give Boston a lineup of Queta, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White, with the last two spots up for grabs. Payton Pritchard vs. Anfernee Simons at point guard? Sam Hauser vs. Georges Niang at forward? Maybe Josh Minott sneaks into the mix? Yeah, it’s July. But hey, the debates have begun. No Davison, slim Simmons ddds Boston officially parted ways with JD Davison this week, ending a three-year run with the former second-round pick. According to Robb, the team just didn’t see NBA-level growth. And what about that open roster spot? Ben Simmons is out there. But Robb pegs the odds of Simmons landing in Boston at just 10-20 percent, mainly because he’s expected to get better money (and probably a bigger role) elsewhere. More NBA News Rumors
